BMI uses a “follow-the-dollar” distribution methodology for SiriusXM® satellite radio services. Royalty rates are calculated using performance data provided to BMI by SiriusXM® in combination with the BMI license fees collected for the service.
The SiriusXM® Bonus
BMI has implemented a new value system for the most-played works on SiriusXM® channels, beginning with Q4 2018 performances. Bonuses will be based on a number of factors including performance counts across all SiriusXM® channels, and the number of channels on which a song is performed. BMI derives the bonus funds from a general licensing pool, not directly from SiriusXM® licensing fees, which has been the industry practice since BMI opened its doors. This new value system begins with royalties distributed in June 2019.
