Broadcast Music, Inc. was a proud sponsor of the 2013 New Music Seminar, held in New York City, June 9 - 11. The networking seminar, which took place at the New Yorker Hotel, featured more than 150 industry leaders speaking on topics including music publishing, booking agents, independent labels and more. In addition, attendees enjoyed performances by up-and-coming artists at eight venues over three nights. BMI songwriter Vanessa Bley of the band Beast Patrol was interviewed by Music Confidential’s Executive Editor/Publisher Susan Butler at a BMI-sponsored event on June 11. Earlier that day, Richard Conlon, BMI Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy, Communications & New Media, participated in a panel on music publishing alongside Justin Kalifowitz (President, Downtown Music Publishing); Larry Mestel (Founder & CEO, Primary Wave); Laurent Hubert (President, Creative & Marketing, BMG); Danny Strick (Co-president, Sony/ATV) and Billy Mann (CEO, Green & Bloom/TOPL1NE). The panel discussed, among other issues, the role of the publisher in 2013, the transition from a physical to a digital-dominated business, the impact of copyrights and the proliferation of user-generated content on the Internet.
