Joe Lovano Leads BMI Charge at JJA Jazz Awards

BMI jazz greats took home trophy after trophy during the annual Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards, held Monday, June 14 in New York City. Legendary saxophonist and composer Joe Lovano enjoyed a trio of wins, scoring Record of the Year for his album Folk Art, Tenor Saxophonist of the Year, and Small Ensemble Group of the Year with his group Joe Lovano Us Five.

2010 Grammy winner Kurt Elling was named Male Singer of the Year, while Roberta Gambarini was crowned Female Singer of the Year. Large Ensemble of the Year went to Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society as Argue underscored the power of his breakout year with the Up & Coming Artist of the Year win.

Accolades were also showered on BMI instrumentalist/composers. Terence Blanchard was tapped as Trumpeter of the Year, while Roswell Rudd, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Nicole Mitchell, Gary Smulyan, Jim Hall, Kenny Barron, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Dave Holland, Cyro Baptista, Paul Motian and Evan Parker earned Trombonist, Alto Saxophonist, Flutist, Baritone Saxophonist, Guitarist, Pianist, Organist, Bassist, Percussionist, Drummer, and Soprano Saxophonist of the Year, respectively.

The stirring Anita O’ Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer, produced by AOD Productions/Elan Entertainment, was named DVD of the Year, while icon James Moody received the Lifetime Achievement in Jazz.
