BMI proudly presented its Icon Award to music creator James Newton Howard at the Company’s annual Film/TV Awards, held last night at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. The ceremony was hosted by BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations, Doreen Ringer-Ross, and BMI President and CEO Mike O’Neill, who also saluted composer/conductor David Newman, as well as the composers of music featured in the past year’s top-grossing films, top-rated primetime network television series and highest-ranking cable network programs.

BMI’s Icon Award is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. Last night’s recipient, James Newton Howard, is one of the most versatile and respected composers currently working in film. His career spans more than thirty years and 120 films, including the Academy Award-nominated scores for Defiance (for which he also earned a Golden Globe nomination), Michael Clayton, The Village, The Fugitive, The Prince of Tides, and My Best Friend’s Wedding, as well as Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated songs for Junior and One Fine Day (for which he also earned a GRAMMY nod). Howard also received a Golden Globe nomination for his massive orchestral score to Peter Jackson’s blockbuster remake of King Kong, while his co-score with Hans Zimmer for The Dark Knight won the 2009 GRAMMY and his music from Blood Diamond also received a GRAMMY nomination.

BMI also acknowledged composer/conductor David Newman with the Classic Contribution Award for his advocacy of film music performances in concert halls, most notably through his work with the American Youth Symphony. Newman is one of today’s most accomplished creators of music for film, as well as being one of the most sought-after conductors. In his 25-year career, he has scored more than 100 films, ranging from War of the Roses, Matilda, Bowfinger and Heathers, to the more recent The Spirit, Serenity, Behaving Badly and Tarzan.

Additional BMI Film/TV Award winners included visionary composers Christopher Lennertz, Harry Gregson-Williams, Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL, Brian Tyler, Atli Örvarsson, Danny Elfman and Mark Mothersbaugh, among others.
