BMI Mourns the Loss of Cedar Walton

Posted in News on August 22, 2013

Broadcast Music, Inc. mourns the loss of beloved hard bop pianist, jazz composer and longtime BMI member Cedar Walton, who passed away at the age of 79 in August 2013. The Jazz Master contributed standards such as “Firm Roots,” “Clockwise” and “Bolivia” to the jazz canon. Highlights of Walton’s 60-plus-year career as a professional pianist included recording an early version of John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, critically acclaimed work with the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey and being honored as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2010. The award also noted his impressive collection of composer works, still performed in jazz clubs around the world today. He will be sorely missed by his friends and fans at BMI.
