BMI Remembers Texas Legend Flaco Jiménez

BMI is saddened to learn of the passing of Flaco Jiménez, a legendary Tex-Mex accordion player and Tejano songwriter who passed away Friday at the age of 86. For over seven decades, Jiménez earned a reputation as the preeminent practitioner of the San Antonio Conjunto sound, lending all of his recordings the distinct flavor the musical tradition of the region. Over the course of his long career, Jiménez was a prolific solo artist, session musician and band member of ensembles like the Texas Tornados and the GRAMMY-winning Los Super Seven. He collaborated with a wide host of artists, including Ry Cooder, Dr. John and Carlos Santana, and guested on recordings by luminaries like Bob Dylan, Dwight Yoakum and the Rolling Stones.

Among his many accomplishments, Jiménez won six GRAMMYs, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. He also won Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Americana Music Awards and the Tejano Music Awards. He was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in 2015. A photo of Jiménez hangs in the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., and his 1992 album Partners was inducted into the National Recording Registry’s class of 2020, wherein Jiménez was hailed for being a champion of traditional conjunto music and Tex-Mex culture.
