BMI Remembers Legendary Film Composer Lalo Schifrin

A master of his field, Schifrin’s signature music scored hundreds of films and television series, starting in the early 1960s, and raised the bar on the art form. Acclaimed for his musical versatility, effortlessly incorporating multiple genres into his complex orchestral compositions, Schifrin’s most renowned works include the classic themes to Mission: Impossible and Mannix, as well as the scores to beloved films as Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, THX 1138, Enter the Dragon, The Four Musketeers, The Eagle Has Landed, The Amityville Horror, the Rush Hour trilogy and many, many more.

As a music creator, Lalo Schifrin was an accomplished composer, arranger, conductor and pianist and jazz musician. Over the course of his groundbreaking career, he won five GRAMMY Awards, four Emmy Awards and six Academy Awards, including an Honorary Academy Award specifically in recognition of his “unique musical style, compositional integrity and influential contributions to the art of scoring.” In 2016, he was honored as a Commandeur of Arts and Letters by France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Commander of Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Ministry of Culture. Since first affiliating with BMI in 1963, Schifrin has won eight BMI awards and was honored with the Richard Kirk Award in 1988.

Lalo Schifrin will be greatly missed by the entire film composing community and his fans, friends and family at BMI.
