BMI was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Brian Wilson, the visionary co-founder of The Beach Boys and musical genius behind iconic hits such as “I Get Around,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfin Safari,” and many more. The longtime BMI affiliate was 82 years old.

Wilson’s unparalleled talent for songwriting, arranging, and producing propelled The Beach Boys to global stardom and cemented his legacy as one of the most influential figures in music history. From the joyous surf-rock anthems of the early 1960s like “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “California Girls” to the introspective and complex pop masterpieces, such as “God Only Knows” and “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times,” Wilson consistently pushed the boundaries of what pop music could achieve. His intricate vocal harmonies, sophisticated orchestrations, and deeply personal lyrics created a unique and enduring sound that captivated global audiences. Wilson was an integral part of The Beach Boys 50-year run as one of the greatest bands in the history of Rock ‘n Roll.

Under his creative guidance, The Beach Boys produced an astounding string of hits, including the iconic “Good Vibrations,” a symphonic pop marvel often cited for its revolutionary production techniques. His album Pet Sounds stands as a testament to his creative talents, recognized as one of the greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone and a pivotal influence on countless artists across genres. Wilson’s innovative studio techniques and his unwavering pursuit of musical excellence inspired a generation of musicians and producers, forever altering the landscape of popular music.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Wilson was nominated for nine GRAMMY awards, winning two, and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song for “One Kind Of Love.” He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 as a member of The Beach Boys and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000. Additionally, Wilson was a bestselling author of the memoir, I Am Brian Wilson, and the subject of the critically acclaimed film Love & Mercy. He received the BMI President’s Award in 1995 and was named a BMI Icon at the 52nd Annual BMI Pop Awards in 2004.

A treasure of American music, Brian Wilson’s impact is immeasurable, and he leaves behind a legacy of timeless songs that will continue to resonate with fans worldwide. He will be profoundly missed by his friends, fans and family at BMI.
