The first words on ggwendolyn’s “Superstar Syndrome” speak of forthcoming greatness, and for the songwriter behind them, the lyrics are a self-fulfilling prophecy. After years of refining her sound, the LA-based singer/songwriter’s debut album Superstar Syndrome features eleven songs of pop-rock brilliance, landing somewhere akin to Gen-Z’s Sheryl Crow in its relatability, charm and melodic sophistication. The record isn’t ggwendolyn’s first foray into pop music. She’s been writing songs since age 16 for artists like Chappell Roan, FLETCHER and Ryn Weaver, and previously released several EPs under the mononym wens, but Superstar Syndrome marks the beginning of a new era for the artist. Collaborating with Ryan Raines, the album was finished in just one week and reintroduces ggwendolyn to the world in her most authentic form. Identity is central to the album, from her bubbly, lighthearted personality on “Jock My Style” to her Italian-Iranian background on “Don’t Break Up The Band” and “Tehran,” with lyrics that come straight from the heart. As she steps into a brand-new sound that feels more comfortable and real, ggwendolyn is establishing herself as the next alt-pop superstar. Look out for Superstar Syndrome dropping July 31.
