BMI Hosts Guitar Workshop in New York

BMI recently hosted eight singer/songwriters for the inaugural edition of BMI’s Guitar Workshop in the New York office. This series is designed to aid Latin artists in learning the basics of guitar-playing and allow them to sharpen their skills and knowledge of rhythm, harmonies, melodies and lyrics.

Master guitarists Mario Guini and Cristian Camilo Castro were enlisted to instruct the first workshop. Castro is a producer and guitarist who fell in love with music at an early age and has performed with artists like J. Quiles, Valentino and Karol G, to name a few. Guini is a producer and multi-instrumentalist with more than 15 years in the music industry and has worked with the likes of Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, among many others.

During the class, songwriters had the opportunity to ask questions and refine their skills in a creative environment. Guini and Castro guided these songwriters and taught them how to play basic chords and recognize common guitar progressions and harmonies. They encouraged the writers to find a flow within the melodies they learned to play on the guitar, in order to help them compose original new songs. The Guitar Workshop series was specifically designed to offer support and encouragement to local Latin songwriters and music-creators, and BMI looks forward to seeing this initiative grow and flourish.
