September 7, 2011 BMI presented its annual “Don’t Knock the Rock” roundtable on Saturday, August 20 at the Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles. Expert panelists included Doreen Ringer Ross, Vice President, Film/TV Relations, BMI; director Allison Anders (Grace of My Heart, Strutter and Sugartown); Liz McNicoll, VP Music Business Affairs, Paramount Pictures; music supervisors Tiffany Anders (Like Crazy, Kaboom and Douchebag) and Howard Parr (Monster, The ‘L’ Word and Herbie Fully Loaded); John Anderson, Senior Director, Film, Television and Media, ole Music Publishing; composer Michael Andrews (Cyrus, Bridemaids and Bad Teacher); and composer Andrew Gross of Konsonant Music Licensing. Moderated by BMI songwriter, artist and actor Michael Des Barres, the chat covered topics including strategies for securing song placement in film and television; song clearance and other licensing concerns; music supervisors’ resources for song discovery; scoring for film, TV and video games; suggestions for navigating legal waters and securing copyright protection; and other hot-button film, television and video gaming music issues.
