The all-girl class listened to Brewton describe how she got started in the music industry and learned about the many other music careers there are besides being an artist or performer. She also explained what BMI does for songwriters, and through a few math word problems, gave the students the opportunity to figure out how much money a writer would be paid by BMI if their song was played on the radio a certain number of times.

Teach for America’s mission is to enlist the nation’s most promising future leaders in the movement to eliminate educational inequality. This is accomplished by building a diverse, highly selective national corps of outstanding recent college graduates—of all academic majors and career interests—who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools in the nation’s lowest-income communities and become lifelong leaders for expanding educational opportunity.
