This fall, BMI will again be offering a course to act as a prologue to the Lehman Engel Librettists Workshop. The year-long course, called “Musical Theatre Bookwriting Basics,” is taken by incoming members before joining the current librettists workshop. The course will be taught in two semesters by Adam Mathias and David Spencer and will take place Tuesday evenings at 5:30 PM at BMI’s NY office (7 World Trade Center, 250 Greenwich Street, New York City – 30th floor conference room) Applications are due by June 1.

About the course:

Musical Theatre Bookwriting Basics explores the fundamentals of bookwriting for musical theatre through a series of lectures and assignments.

Fall Semester
Drama Desk award-winning bookwriter Adam Mathias unlocks the toolkit for musical theatre librettists. Through lecture, discussion and assignments, students learn how to apply the fundamentals of playwriting to the craft of creating musicals.

Spring Semester
David Spencer, award-winning bookwriter/lyricist and author of The Musical Theatre Writers’ Survival Guide, leads an exploration through a series of masterworks to uncover what makes them work. In addition, through analysis of promising source material for unsuccessful shows that had the potential to work, the class endeavors to solve inherent challenges that the original creative teams didn’t.
