Kanye West, Adele Lead BMI List of Grammy Nominees
Kanye West and Adele top the long list of BMI nominees for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, announced Wednesday, November 30.
With seven, West garnered the most nods of any artist. His prolific risk-taking over the past year helped ensure his nominations haul. He’ll compete against himself in the Best Rap Album field: solo effort My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Watch the Throne, his project with Jay-Z were both tapped. West’s “All of the Lights” earned two nominations, as did his duet with Jay-Z, “Otis.”
Adele – who is a member of U.K. performing right society PRS for Music and chooses BMI to collect her royalties in the U.S. – follows closely behind West with six nominations. Her universally acclaimed sophomore release 21 will vie for Album of the Year, while “Rolling in the Deep,” which she co-wrote, is up for Record and Song of the Year. Her emotionally charged “Someone Like You” will also compete for Grammy gold in the Best Pop Solo Performance field.
Lady Gaga, Foo Fighters and Rihanna join Adele in the Album of the Year category. The Song of the Year field is also full of BMI’s top writers: In addition to Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” Kanye West’s “All of the Lights,” which he co-wrote with songwriter/producer Jeff Bhasker and rapper/writer Really Doe, and Bruno Mars’ “Grenade,” co-written by hit-makers Claude Kelly and Andrew Wyatt, both earned nods.
Best New Artist nods went to Nicki Minaj and the Band Perry. Minaj also earned nominations in Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Album fields.
