Indie Spotlight: Alfonso Velez
After joining Alfonso Velez at the piano for a recent performance at Joe’s Pub, Nonesuch Records Grammy Award Winner Fernando Otero remarked, “That was amazing.” It’s a wonder that Velez hasn’t yet broken through to the masses. He has released an astonishing 10 solo albums. “Words,” from this year’s self-titled album, has all the ingredients to make AAA radio DJs salivate, and the rest of the album, recorded in a dance hall next to EMI records, is backed by a Juilliard string section, summoning OK Computer levels of majestic, aching melodrama. Whatever the reason for his relative obscurity, Alfonso remains prolific, touring the East Coast and Europe, winning audiences over one gig at a time.
