Whether they’re using their music to speak out against injustice or bravely sharing their rawest emotions, BMI’s latest group of indie artists is refreshingly unapologetic and unafraid. Husband-and-wife duo Elephant Heart’s mesmerizing tracks chronicle both their love story and international travels, and indie-pop singer Dylan Dunlap and EDM up-and-comer Tim Dehnert (TRACES) use vulnerability to make their songs even more resonant. TOXIC GARDN creates powerful anthems to inspire listeners to stand up for their convictions, while Cobi’s soulful, political ballads speak honestly about issues like violence and racial disparity. Though rooted in folk, Vera Blue has continually polished her sound with electronic embellishments that showcase her powerful voice, and CKY has staged a comeback based on rollicking, unpretentious rock-and-roll. The trio WILD has found their groove as a purveyor of uplifting tracks that feel simultaneously familiar and refreshing, and Jake Scott is an experienced hitmaker who, to the delight of fans, has turned the lens on his own life through a series of independent releases. It’s time to freshen up your playlists and get to know the pioneering musicians who, with every new riff, write a bit of musical history.
