Calle 13 stormed the 2011 Latin Grammys, taking home golden hardware in eight of their record-breaking 10 nominations during the ceremony November 10 in Las Vegas. The Puerto Rican duo took home top prizes in the general field, including Record and Song of the Year for “Latinoamérica,” as well as Album of the Year for Entren Los Que Quieran. Calle 13’s eclectic reggaeton veers into hip-hop, traditional, and quirky styles, which led to an impressive domination of multiple award categories, from urban to alternative to tropical.

While Calle 13 led the charge, numerous other BMI songwriters also took home red-letter awards hauls.

Best New Artist went to Sie7e, whose latest album Mucha Cosa Buena has not only ensnared listeners in his native Puerto Rico but throughout the continental U.S. as well.

In the pop field, Shakira took home Best Female Pop Vocal Album honors for Sale el Sol, while Alex, Jorge y Lena’s self-titled release was named Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Drama y Luz, the eighth studio album from giants Maná, earned Best Rock Album by a Duo or a Group with Vocal.

In addition to Calle 13, the tropical category honored José Alberto “El Canario,” whose Original garnered Best Salsa Album honors, and Cachao, whose The Last Mambo was named Best Traditional Tropical Album.

The Regional Mexican field saluted BMI favorites as well. Little Joe & La Familia’s Recuerdos scored the Best Tejano Album win, while legends Los Tigres Del Norte earned Best Norteño Album for their contribution to the MTV Unplugged series.

Paquito D’Rivera walked away with a pair of wins: Best Latin Jazz Album and Best Classical Contemporary Composition for “Panamericana Suite,” which he wrote.

Shakira was named the Latin Grammys Person of the Year, while the inimitable Linda Ronstadt received the academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
