Posted in News on February 7, 2025

BMI was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary producer and music executive Irving “Irv Gotti” Lorenzo, who died this week at the age of 54. A visionary figure in Hip-Hop and the primary architect of the Murder Inc. record label, Gotti’s signature sonic touch propelled the music careers of names like Ja Rule, Ashanti, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, DMX, Fat Joe, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Foxy Brown and many others, regularly populating the charts with consistent Hot 100 hits.

Over the course of his remarkable career, Gotti won a GRAMMY in 2004 for Best R&B Song for Ashanti’s “Rock Wit U (Awww Baby),” collected 17 BMI awards and was consecutively named Songwriter of the Year at the BMI Urban Awards in 2003 and 2004. He leaves behind a formidable legacy for both his passion for music and his industry savvy. Irv Gotti will be sorely missed by his friends, fans, and family at BMI.
