The BMI Foundation has proudly announced that it will honor colleague and retired BMI Creative Vice President Charlie Feldman with the establishment of the Charlie Feldman Award. The prize of $2,000 will be given annually to an emerging songwriter in any genre. BMI Foundation Vice President and BMI Creative VP Samantha Cox will preside over the nomination process with a select committee of artists, writers, and BMI staff.

“We are thrilled to be able to honor our friend and colleague, Charlie Feldman, in this way. Charlie has always nurtured and championed songwriters throughout their careers, and this award will continue to echo his love and support for music creators and the craft of songwriting,” said Cox.

“When Samantha Cox surprised me with this wonderful award in my name, I was speechless. What I have always wanted to do in my career is honor and support songwriters.  I am thankful and moved that The BMI Foundation under the leadership of Deirdre Chadwick has created this initiative.”

Initial funding for the new program came from the generosity of Feldman’s colleagues and friends in celebration of his retirement in 2020. The nomination process began in late summer 2021 with the inaugural award presented to singer-songwriter Meg Smith. Smith, who is originally from LA, is currently based in Brooklyn and graduated from the Clive Davis Institute at NYU in 2021. She’s been writing and performing consistently since she was in high school, catching the eye of a growing and loyal fan base and independently releasing her debut EP American in Paris in September 2020, followed by her Cross My Heart I Hope U Die EP in 2021. The latest project features her bewitching pop break-up anthem of the same name as her passion for social and environmental activism propels her forward alongside a generation of like-minded young artists. The single was featured on Salt, Fresh Finds as well as on the cover of Best of Fresh Finds Pop 2021. Listen to it here!
