BMI applauds the talented Elvis Crespo on his numerous accomplishments and contributions to the Latin music community for more than two decades. In 1998, the GRAMMY award-winner released his debut album Suavemente, which was certified platinum for more than 1 million copies sold in the U.S. by the Recording Industry Association of America. Billboard classified the album among the most essential Latin albums of the past 50 years.
The album boasted the iconic worldwide hit “Suavemente,” which would go down in Latin music history, as one of the most commercially successful Spanish songs of all time. To date, the single has garnered more than 105 million views on YouTube and along with the album’s second most popular single, “Tu Sonrisa” topped the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, making Crespo the first artist to have two merengue singles go to number one. “Suavemente,” has also been featured on TV shows such as House of Cards, Dancing with the Stars, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The X Factor and Law & Order. The lyrics have also been printed on the packaging of Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Coke Zero and Cola-Cola Life bottles as part of the brand’s “Share a Coke and a Song” campaign.
The Puerto Rican songwriter has received several accolades including the coveted Billboard Latin Music Award for Album of the Year and New Artist Album of the Year along with the Premio Lo Nuestro statue for Tropical Album and Song of the Year and a GRAMMY. Crespo’s undeniable talent as a singer/songwriter transcends genres and generations, leaving a lasting impression on music lovers around the world. Recently, the Puerto Rican singer presented Suavemente, 20 Aniversario, honoring two decades of the timeless production, including the merengue classics “Suavemente,” “Luna Llena” and “Tu Sonrisa.”
BMI is proud to have Elvis Crespo as part of the family since 1995. He has earned countless BMI Latin Awards over the years and we look forward to continuing to support Crespo throughout his career.
