BMI’s 29th Annual Summer Showcase Concert featured the best new big band and jazz orchestra compositions created during the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop over the past year, and concluded with the presentation of the Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize. Remy La Boeuf’s piece, “Sibbian,” was chosen as the winning work by a distinguished judging panel including 2015 Charlie Parker Prize winner Miho Hazama and respected jazz musicians Chris Byars and Slide Hampton. The prestigious award, which honors the memory of jazz icon Charlie Parker, includes the $3,000 Manny Albam commission, named in honor of the workshop’s late founder and longtime musical director, to write a new work to premiere at next year’s showcase concert. Last year’s prize winner, Dan Block, premiered his new piece, “Kompa-row,” during this year’s event, held at the Marjoe S. Deane Little Theater in New York City on June 6.
