Composer Alan Menken Saluted at Concert and Reception

BMI composer Alan Menken, winner of eight Academy Awards, seven Golden Globes and 10 Grammys, was saluted by the Kaufman Center's Broadway Close Up series at a special concert entitled "Part of Your World: The Music of Alan Menken."

Held on September 26, the event was hosted by Tony Award-winning lyricist Lynn Ahrens and featured an in-depth discussion of Menken's work and several performances of his award-winning songs. BMI hosted a reception after the show at Nick & Toni's Caf� down the street from the Kaufman Center.

An alumni of the Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, Menken has written the songs and scores to The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules and Home on the Range, as well as the songs to the stage and film versions of Little Shop of Horrors.

Other accolades include the London Evening Standard, Olivier, New York Drama Critics and Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards; the #1 Billboard album Pocahontas; and the #1 single "A Whole New World."

The prolific composer has also written music for Madison Square Garden's stage and NBC's film productions of A Christmas Carol, plus the stage productions of King David, God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, Real Life Funnies, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and Weird Romance.

Upcoming projects include stage versions of Leap of Faith, Sister Act and The Little Mermaid, an ABC television production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and the newly remade Disney film A Shaggy Dog.
