Theatre Workshop Goes Behind the Scenes at ‘Avenue Q’

Posted in News on October 14, 2004
Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop alumni Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez, creators of triple Tony Award-winning musical "Avenue Q," took time from their busy schedules to shoot a video in the BMI New York office. Entitled, "The Making of Avenue Q," the show features the witty writing pair demonstrating the creative process that would eventually lead them to a mega-hit on Broadway.

Marx and Lopez, who met in the BMI Workshop in 1998, developed "Avenue Q" there. A sassy and irreverent story about newfound friends struggling to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life, "Avenue Q" opened Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre (in a co-production with the New Group) in March 2003. It was extended four times before moving to Broadway's Golden Theatre in July 2003. The show also won the 2003 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical, and earned a nomination for the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical Award.

Gathering before the taping are (standing) Pat Cook, Workshop Artistic
Coordinator and Moderator of the show; Frank Evans, Associate Producerof the show; BMI's Jean Banks; and (seated) Avenue Q creators Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx.
