BMI Jazz Giants Dominate Readers Poll

BMI's top names in jazz once again dominated the year end JazzTimes Readers Poll, winning more than 70% of the categories. Topping the list was jazz bassist Dave Holland with four wins, including Best Acoustic Bass and Best Arranger, as well as Best Acoustic Group for the Dave Holland Quintet and Best Big Band for the Dave Holland Big Band.

Wayne Shorter

BMI jazz great Wayne Shorter earned three wins, including the poll's top award: Artist of the Year. He was also named Best Soprano Saxophone Artist and his new CD, Alegria, was named Best New Release. Shorter was a big winner in the recent DownBeat Jazz Critics Poll as well.

Other top winners were B.B. King for Best Blues Group, Miles Davis' Live at the Blackhawk for Best Reissue and the Pat Metheny Group for Best Contemporary/Electric Group. Metheny was also named Best Guitarist.
