Cliff Martinez and Top Composers Honored at the 2013 BMI Film & TV Awards
Broadcast Music, Inc. saluted the composers of music featured in the past year’s top-grossing films, top-rated primetime network television series and highest-ranking cable network programs at its annual Film & TV Awards, which took place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on May 15, 2013.
Renowned composer Cliff Martinez received BMI’s Richard Kirk Award for his significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. Known for creating works that are fiercely original and artistically bold, Martinez began his venture into film scoring in 1989 with the Steven Soderbergh directed Sex, Lies, and Videotape - the first of ten theatrical releases they have collaborated on, including Kafka, The Limey, Traffic, Solaris and Contagion. As the 2013 recipient of the Richard Kirk Award, Martinez joins a prestigious list that includes David Arnold, Rachel Portman (PRS), Alan Silvestri, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Christopher Young, George S. Clinton, Harry Gregson-Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Kamen, Mark Mothersbaugh, Danny Elfman, Alan Menken, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin, John Barry, Rolfe Kent, Charlie Fox and John Williams.
“I always thought that writing for films was the best job in the world…the sky was the limit; you could approach it any way that you wanted, use any instrument you wanted. And all the directors that I’ve worked with have encouraged me to score their films in my own unique way, so to be able to write the music that you really, really want to write, the music that you really love and get paid for it, is the best job in the world. I really want to thank BMI for standing by me all these years,” said Martinez upon receiving the award, which was presented to him by the night’s hosts, BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer-Ross.
Several of Martinez’s friends and collaborators congratulated him via a tribute video, including Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Steven Soderbergh, Harmony Korine and Nicolas Winding Refn, director of the upcoming Martinez-scored film, Only God Forgives.
In addition to bestowing Martinez with the Richard Kirk Award, BMI was proud to recognize the composers behind the top-grossing films of the year, including Alan Silvestri (The Avengers), Thomas Newman (Skyfall), Danny Elfman (Oz the Great and Powerful, Men in Black 3) and John Williams (Lincoln).
iZLER (Revenge, Shameless), Rolfe Kent (Dexter) and Charlie Clouser (American Horror Story) were among the BMI composers honored in the realm of television, where 73% of all primetime shows of the preceding year had BMI composers behind them.
“Tonight’s awards reflected the broad spectrum of extraordinarily gifted composers in BMI’s family. It was an unforgettable night and a beautiful celebration of achievements in film and television music,” said Ringer-Ross.
