Posted in News on April 16, 2021

The University of Southern California hosted a unique discussion on Wednesday, April 14 featuring BMI composers Chris Lennertz and Dara Taylor, who spoke about their experiences in the film/TV and visual media industry. Lennertz, a graduate of USC, talked about his journey in the business over the last 25 years, gave advice on what makes a good composer, and shared insights on building relationships with directors. Taylor, who worked under Lennertz for many years, explained the dynamic of working for an established composer in a support role at Sonic Fuel Studios, until eventually branching out into her own projects. Music journalist Jon Burlingame also joined the conversation, asking questions about the composers’ process and working in the industry today, while BMI’s Natalie Baartz and Reema Iqbal answered students’ questions about performing rights organizations, cue sheets and business admin. USC faculty members Dan Carlin and Patrick Gilbride organized the event.
