Do you have questions about the use of music in your business? Please review the FAQ’s below or contact a BMI representative for additional assistance.
Common questions:
Q: Why Is Music Such A Valuable Tool For A Sports League or Team?
Because music is energizing and motivating! When an audience is energized, they are more enthusiastic and involved in the game’s action and show more interest in their team’s standing. Interest leads to loyalty and regular game attendance. Music also helps to keep that enthusiasm high during pauses in game play. Many sport arenas capitalize on the engaging power of music and have state of the art sound systems that play signature songs like “Who Let The Dogs Out” and “We Will Rock You” during the game, making music and sports a natural blend.
Q: Who Needs a License?
Any league or individual team playing music in a facility where professional league
games are being played, including exhibition, regular season, all star, playoff, and
championship game(s).
Q: How Does A BMI Music Performance Agreement Permit Me To Use Music?
The Professional League Music Performance Agreement allows you to play or perform all of the musical works in the BMI repertoire as often as you like. It s your ticket to perform our affiliates’ music in the following ways:
- a live performance or other musical attraction within your facility on a game day as long as there is no separate charge for that live performance;
- live or recorded music (from your own tapes, CDs, MP3s, etc.) used as entertainment for the spectators within your facility before, after and/or during games.
Please keep in mind that the agreement does not cover music performed in any hotel, restaurant or other facility at your place of business. It also does not include the right to record or reproduce any musical performance on tape, CD, MP3, etc.
Q: How do report under our Professional League Agreement?
For individual teams:
After the first contract year and at the same time that you pay your fee, you will submit a report (on a form provided by BMI) indicating your published attendance in the prior contract year and your license fee for that subsequent contract year, after multiplying your published attendance by the Attendance Fee Rate in your contract.
For leagues:
After the first contract year and at the same time that you pay your fee, you will submit a report (on a form provided by BMI) listing all teams in the league and the published attendance for each team in the prior contract year. You will also calculate your license fee for that subsequent contract year, after multiplying your published attendance by the Attendance Fee Rate in your contract
