Henry Poole Is Here

We went with composer John Frizzell to see his film Henry Poole Is Here which was directed by Mark Pellington (who also co-directed the U2 film).  Mark is my new hero just because of these two films….both wildly different kinds of projects and both great.  Henry Poole is sort of a fable about…well…surviving loss, the power of love, and choosing to have hope/faith.  Luke Wilson gives a wonderfully resonant performance as Henry and John Frizzell’s beautiful score perfectly reflects the evolving emotional interior of the story.

Later that night, we hosted our “Big Crowded Room” party DJ’d by the always incredible Thomas Golubic.  The coolest thing about Sundance is the eclectic and global nature of Geoff Gilmore’s programming.  There are films there from all over the world, both documentaries and narratives, all about something substantial.  Geoff and John Cooper and staff go through thousands and thousands of films to select what they show at the festival so each film screened has been carefully selected through their brilliant filter.  It is such a gift.  Programming is a sometimes unrecognized art form unto itself but if you think about the long term impact these guys have on who populates the future of the film business…it’s pretty daunting.  I try to see as many films as I can when I’m there but it barely scratches the surface of what’s included.  I find that just steeping in the waters of this festival and the work done at the Sundance Institute each year is what sustains my deep love of the film business. In addition to our composers, artists, and music business family, I was very pleased to welcome so many new filmmakers to our party this year.
