Honesty and Puppets

I have been a fan of filmmaker Jessica Yu ever since she won the Oscar for her short film “Breathing Lessons”....and joked during her acceptance speech that the dress she was wearing that night cost more than her film did.  This year her newest feature documentary “Protagonist” scored by Jeff Beal is in the documentary competition.  The film explores four individual men whose lives went through a major transition.  It deals with the notion of conscience and navigating from right to wrong. Although the stories are all present day, they are paragraphed with extraordinary puppetry functioning as a classic Greek chorus.  Musically this allowed Jeff to use a lot of exotic ancient sounding world instruments to create his really intriguing score.
