Tom DiCillo is a real deal filmmaker
by Doreen Ringer Ross
Tom DiCillo is back at Sundance. Tom is a real deal filmmaker. I have been following his career since he first showed up here with “Johnny Suede” (one of Brad Pitt’s first films). I think that might have been in 1991. Since then he did “Living In Oblivion”, “Box of Moonlight”, “The Real Blonde” etc. This year he is here with the premiere of “Delirious” which took him six years to make. Sometimes actualizing your vision in the world of independent film takes lots of patience. In this case, it was so worth it.
Steve Buscemi plays a sleazy yet loveable paparazzo who befriends a homeless yet virtuous stud muffin played by Michael Pitt…and especially at a time when our culture is so celebrity obsessed, this witty satire is hysterical at the same time that it makes you think about deeper issues like the meaning of friendship, truth, betrayal, and forgiveness. Anton Sanko did a brilliant job on the score. He got a big round of applause when Tom brought him to stage for the Q&A after the screening along with the cast members. Given the subject matter of the film I was laughing about how life imitates art imitating life as we set up this photo after the screening…but…
