Life is a Constant Concert

I believe that life is a constant concert of the horrible and the beautiful…and our reality is shaped by what we choose to focus on.  So, Saturday while Linda and I were trudging through the snow to see Steve Berra’s film “The Good Life” at the Racquet Club, I tried to focus on how beautiful the sunlight looked glistening on the snow covered ground…instead of how frigging cold it is this week in Utah and how challenging the parking is during the festival.  I was wondering what kind of film a champion skateboarder could possibly make that would be worth enduring all the discomfort.  Then I thought….how bad could it be if he got Don Davis to score it….and a cast that included Zooey Deschenel, Mark Webber, Donal Logue, and Harry Dean Stanton?  It turned out to be brilliant and thematically exactly in synch with my life philosophy.  The audience loved it.  As always, Don Davis did a beautiful job on the score. It was great to see him and his fantastic daughter Kamyla up here. I am looking forward to having him and Steve Berra on our composer/director roundtable on Wednesday.

From there we headed over to the Eccles to meet up with composer Jonathan Goldsmith (no relation to Jerry), his agent Linda Kordek, and director/actress Sarah Polley at the premiere of her film “Away From Her.”  This film is heartbreaking yet inspiring…about a couple passionately in love and inseparable for 45 years going through a wrenching transition from lovers to strangers caused by memory loss.  It was difficult for me to think of sexy stunning Julie Christie as an older woman in a nursing home but her performance is very convincing.  Jonathan’s score perfectly captured the tone of the piece.
