The soul of the film is right on target

by Doreen Ringer Ross

Saturday night we went to see “Interview” directed by and starring Steve Buscemi and co-starring Sienna Miller which was based on the late Dutch director Theo Van Gogh’s film of the same name.  (Yes, he was related to Vincent)  Buscemi plays a serious journalist begrudgingly assigned to interview a hot infamous actress named Katja perfectly played by Miller.  Fueled by lots of alcohol, their encounter gets increasingly intense and combative as the evening wears on.  I loved it.  My favorite detail was Katja’s constantly interrupting cell phone…which made the sound of a small dog yapping.  It was so delightfully annoying I’m thinking about finding that ringtone for my own phone.  Composer Evan Lurie did the score and there are some well used source cues in the soundtrack as well.  We got lucky at the screening and ran into Michelle Byrd who runs the IFP in New York.  It was nice to have a chance to see her.  Surprisingly we got into the Grub Steak across the street for a quick dinner afterwards.
Later that night we met up with composer Larry Groupe at the premiere of Rod Lurie’s “Resurrecting The Champ.”  This premiere felt more like a big Hollywood event than an indie film premiere….given the presence of all star cast members….Alan Alda, Teri Hatcher, and Josh Hartnett as well as legendary producer Mike Medavoy.  Fans were screaming and there was a sea of camera flashes coming from the audience…but the soul of the film is right on target…dealing with complex emotions and family dynamics as well layers of self deception and truth.

Larry did a perfect job on the score and the soundtrack contained some wonderful songs by Julianna Raye and Chris Stills and co-written by Rod Lurie himself.
