BMI recently presented Mercury recording artist and BMI songwriter Randy Montana at Clear Channel's Annual Broadcast Accounting party in San Antonio. Montana entertained the crowd with many of his self-penned songs, including "1,000 Faces," "Ain't Much Left of Lovin' You," and "Didn't I," which is James Wesley’s current single. 2011 was a big year for Montana; he released his eponymous debut album and toured alongside Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum. BMI recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Alliance of Women in Media (AWM) by sponsoring an appearance by Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton at a special luncheon held at the Marriott Marquis in New York. BMI helped Lazer Broadcasting celebrate its 20th anniversary by bringing up-and-coming Regional Mexican duo Ella y El to perform at a gala dinner held recently at the Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo, CA. Ella y El, made up Elyan Zamora and Ismael Gallegos, performed songs from their rich catalogue, including their latest single, “Galan de Vecindario,” which was written by BMI award-winning songwriters Kike Santander and Edgar Cortazar. Lazer Broadcasting owns and operates 18 Spanish language radio stations in 10 California markets. Nashville-based songwriters Lee Thomas Miller and Rodney Clawson recently joined Lawrence, Kansas-based songwriter Van McLain to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB). The songwriters performed a number of their signature songs, including “In Color” by Jamey Johnson, “I Saw God Today” by George Strait, and “Flesh & Blood” by Shooting Star. Grammy award-winning BMI songwriter Joe Ely headlined the Greater Austin Restaurant Association Chapter Kick-Off Party, held recently at the Oasis on Lake Travis. In addition to reaching into his deep catalog that houses solo recordings as well as work with the Flatlanders and others, Ely performed songs from his new album, Satisfied at Last. The Texas native’s distinct sound has shaped generations of artists from his home state, while he has also influenced and shared the stage with a diverse list of international all-stars, from Bruce Springsteen to Uncle Tupelo to the Clash. BMI invited Kansas native Jenn Schott to entertain attendees at the Kansas Restaurant & Hospitality Association (KRHA) Evening of Hospitality, held recently in Wichita. Each year, the KRHA event helps support the organization’s Educational Foundation and celebrates the industry’s rising stars. Schott delivered a captivating performance, full of songs from her catalog recorded by artists such as LeAnn Rimes, Billy Ray Cyrus, Restless Heart, and Mallory Hope. BMI’s Dan Spears spoke to the National Association of Licensing Compliance Professionals (NALCP) at the organization’s annual conference, held in Philadelphia on October 13. Following Spears’ presentation, BMI award-winning songwriter Hugh Prestwood performed a stacked set that included his no. 1 hit “The Song Remembers When.” NALCP includes executives from the hospitality industry who are responsible for both liquor and music licensing at their respective companies.
