Kim Richey, One Day at a Time

Photo

If there’s a downside to songwriting, it’s that the process can be a lonely and solitary activity. Kim Richey resolves that conundrum by doing most of her writing with other people. “I love the social aspect of co-writing,” says Richey, who moved to London last year after spending more than two decades in Nashville. “Some of my closest friendships have come through co-writing, where I’ve gotten to…

John Luther Adams, Finding a Way to Get Lost

Photo

Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, John Luther Adams has been considered an “outsider,” the moniker frequently bestowed on independently-minded artists (think John Cage and Morton Feldman) whose work places them outside the musical establishment. In many ways, this label fits. The New Yorker goes as far as to appoint Adams “the chief standard bearer of American experimental music.” To many, “outsider” is even doubly suitable,…

Jeff Turmes Steps into Overdue Spotlight

Photo

Like all the best music journeymen, multi-instrumentalist Jeff Turmes has spent much of his career toiling modestly in the shadows. Reputed for providing the sort of bedrock musical accompaniment that makes his employers sound their best, Turmes has supplied formidable support for the legendary likes of Mavis Staples, Tom Waits, Richard Thompson, R.L. Burnside, Gatemouth Brown and more. But as his…

Dragonette, Roaring Out of the Gate

Photo

They started off strong. Impossibly strong: The Canadian-bred quartet led by vocalist and principle songwriter Martina Sorbara hit the stage for the first time as Dragonette in 2005. The second time they found themselves together in front of a crowd, they were supporting electro-pop godfathers New Order. A leap like that would leave even the most veteran of performers a little shell-shocked, but perhaps the fledgling outfit…

Indie Spotlight: The Orbans

Photo

The Orbans combine do-it-yourself indie attitude with a unique style of pop music that isn’t afraid to show a little twang. The Orbans draw comparisons to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Big Star, Dr.…

Indie Spotlight: Mona

Photo

Nick Brown is the enigmatic lead singer of four-piece Ohio-raised/Nashville-based band Mona, and his fractious musical and spiritual upbringing, combined with his unrelenting drive to create something special, has resulted in anthemic, emotionally charged vintage rock’n’roll of epic proportions. “Along the way I saw how a song could enrage, heal, speak love, seduce, calm, provoke, challenge and surrender. All in three minutes. That’s what we’re all about,”…

Megan McCormick always knew her life lay in music. It wasn’t a matter of fancy costumes or the notion of thousands of people clamoring for her attention. With a wistful yearning, the young woman who attended East Tennessee State University’s…

Indie Spotlight: Hunting Club

Hunting Club takes aim with its debut self-titled LP: Drawing from a range of artists (Elliott Smith, the Pixies, Portishead and Prince) Hunting Club melts away the thick ice of Minnesota by creating a lush and highly orchestrated sound that bends the ear with drones of happiness and sadness. A group of multi-instrumentalists who oscillate between keys, drums, guitars, and auxiliaries (sometimes mid-song), Hunting…

Indie Spotlight: Deer Tick

Photo

Rhode Island quintet Deer Tick have made an art of stripped down music-making. Raw and fierce, their sound is best savored as a live experience, but recent release The Black Dirt Sessions does a fine job of putting the band’s strongest foot forward. Together, John J. McCauley, Ian P. O'Neil, Rob B. Crowell, Christopher D. Ryan, and Dennis M. Ryan offer a sound that is unpredictable, unpretentious,…
