The 2015 Sundance Film Festival’s “A Celebration of Music in Film” concert on Sunday, January 25, 2015, a tribute to jazz icon Nina Simone, featured a performance by BMI songwriter and Golden Globe winner Common, who closed out the evening with a rousing rendition of his own songs, interspersed with Simone’s signature hits. According to Billboard, Common began with “Misunderstood” (which sampled Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”) and ended with “U, Black Maybe” (where he rapped over Simone’s “Young, Gifted & Black”).

The event was hosted by the Sundance Institute Film Music Program, which is supported by BMI, along with the Time Warner Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, City Drive Films, and The Film Music Foundation.
