BET Awards Toast BMI Urban Stars
BMI hip-hop heavyweights took home the majority of musical category statuettes handed out during the annual BET Awards, held Sunday, June 27. Multi-media phenomenon Drake earned the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist crown, while his fellow BMI hit-maker Trey Songz claimed the Best Male R&B Artist title. Nicki Minaj underscored the power of her breakout year with double wins: Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Best New Artist.
Longtime favorite Marvin Sapp took home the trophy in the Best Gospel field, while the unstoppable Rihanna secured the Viewers’ Choice Award, in honor of her video “Hard,” featuring Young Jeezy. UK chart-climber Dizzee Rascal also enjoyed a big night, earning Best International Act, while John Legend was honored with the Humanitarian Award.
BMI crooner Chris Brown also brought the crowd to its feet with an emotional tribute to BMI Icon Michael Jackson. BMI trendsetters including Eminem, Kirk Franklin, Kanye West, Yolanda Adams, DJ Khaled, Fred Hammond, T-Pain, Kim Burrell and Rick Ross, as well as many of the night’s big BMI winners including Nicki Minaj, Drake, Trey Songz, and Marvin Sapp, all delivered spine-tingling performances.
