BMI Nurtures Art of Conducting at 14th Annual Conducting for the Film Composer Workshop
BMI continued to celebrate and nurture the art of conducting at the organization’s annual six-day Conducting for the Film Composer workshop series, taught by BMI Classic Contribution Award winner, conductor and composer Lucas Richman. Each year, a select group of BMI composers are selected to participate in the workshop, where they hone the craft of conducting, from the fundamentals of multi-meter scores to conducting to picture with a 32-piece orchestra. All classes were taught at The Musicians Union.
This year’s exemplary group of students included working film and television composers Jamie Christopherson (The Crow: Wicked Prayer, Ghost Image and Inside Out); Daniel Hamuy (The Outlaw Emmett Deemus and America); Richard Marvin (Without a Trace, Six Feet Under and The O.C.); Alexander Rudd (Thule, What’s in a Smile? and The Echo); Lisbeth Scott (urFRENZ; featured vocalist in Munich, Avatar and Transformers); Noah Sorota (Falling Skies; additional music in Clash of the Titans); Pinar Toprak (The Lightkeepers, Behind Enemy Lines 2: Axis of Evil and Breaking Point); Benjamin Wynn (Avatar: the Last Airbender) and Jeremy Zuckerman (Avatar: the Last Airbender). The class is coordinated by Ray Yee, BMI Executive Director, Film/TV Relations, along with BMI’s Film/TV Relations staff.
Past participants in the celebrated lab include composers Cliff Martinez, Stewart Copeland, Camara Kambon, Danny Pelfrey, Richard Gibbs, Bill Brown, Bennett Salvay, Rolfe Kent, David Schwartz, Anthony Marinelli, Alex Wurman, David Buckley, Tyler Bates, Nate Barr, James Venable, Mervyn Warren, Christopher Lennertz, Laura Karpman, Guy Moon, Juan Carlos Rodriguez and Jonathan Miller.
