BMI legend Juan Luis Guerra took home Album of the Year for his acclaimed A Son de Guerra during the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards, held Thursday, November 11 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Guerra also earned Best Contemporary Tropical Album and Best Tropical Song thanks to his “Bachata en Fukuoka.”

Alex Cuba (SOCAN) underscored the potency of his breakout year with the Best New Artist trophy. Nelly Furtado’s (SOCAN) Mi Plan, which features songs Furtado co-wrote with Cuba, received Best Female Pop Vocal Album honors. In the urban field, Chino y Nacho’s Mi Niña Bonita scored the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album.

The Regional Mexican sound continues to thrive, and the genre’s award categories were dominated by BMI hitmakers. Banda El Recodo De Cruz Lizárraga’s Me Gusta Todo de Ti and La Original Banda El Limon De Salvador Lizarraga’s Soy Tu Maestro shared the award for the Best Banda Album. The Best Tejano Album went to Elida Reyna y Avante for Fantasia. In the Best Norteño Album race, Grupo Pesado came out on top thanks to their Desde La Cantina Vol. 1. “Amarte a La Antigua,” co-written by Paco Lugo (SACM), earned Best Regional Mexican Song honors.

Sergio George was named Producer of the Year, while Sebastian Krys earned the Best Engineered Album statuette thanks to his engineering work on Distinto.

The João Donato Trio’s Sambolero took home Best Latin Jazz Album, while in the Brazilian field, Gilberto Gil’s two projects Banda Dois and Fé Na Festa earned Best MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) Album and Best Native Brazilian Roots Album, respectively. BMI’s classical Latin music family also had a big night: Fernando Otero’s Vital, which he also produced, was named Best Classical Album, while “Pampas,” composed by the legendary Lalo Schifrin, earned Best Classical Contemporary Composition.
