WellFEST 2010 Targets Hearing Loss, Health Issues
Musicians who are concerned about hearing loss will be interested in WellFEST 2010, targeted to people who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, and everyone who wants to learn more about hearing loss. The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Nashville Public Library, Main Library Conference Center, 615 Church Street, Nashville, TN 37219. Its purpose is to educate and screen participants in a variety of health‑related areas, in a communication-accessible environment, including the use of CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) for people who are hard of hearing or deaf and communicate orally and ASL (American Sign Language) interpreters for people who are deaf.
Educational presentations will be made on a variety of health-related topics by Mel Whalen, deaf psychologist from Eastern Michigan University, and Ron Eavey, MD, SM, Director, Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center, Chair, Vanderbilt Department of Otolaryngology.
Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center will provide information on hearing conservation, hearing aids, assistive technologies, and musician hearing devices. They will also offer hearing and head and neck cancer screenings.
Vanderbilt Dayani Center will provide fitness screenings such as flexibility, strength, BMI (body mass index), height, weight, and body fat.
Vanderbilt Center for Healthy Aging is offering health screenings for vision, including glaucoma (near and far), glucose, blood pressure, clinical breast exams and bone density.
Organizers of the WelIFEST are Hearing Bridges (formerly the League for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and EAR Foundation) and the Library Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Nashville Public Library. The event is also partnering with the Nashville Musicians Association, Local 257.
