BMI’s Alison Smith Honored as One of Billboard’s Top 30 Power Players

Billboard named Alison Smith, BMI Senior Vice President, Performing Rights, one of its Top 30 Power Players during the magazine’s annual Women in Music luncheon, held October 2 in New York. 2009 marks the fifth consecutive compilation of the top-tier list, which “recognizes female executives who drive our business forward with vision, dedication and hard work.” 150 women were nominated by peers in the industry, and Billboard editors trimmed the list to the Top 30.

Smith directs all components of BMI’s royalty distribution system, constantly honing the company’s paradigm to meet the challenges and opportunities posed by an industry that is in a state of constant transition. To carve out her place in the Top 30, Billboard noted Smith’s dexterous and demanding leadership roles, saying, “She supervises royalty payment calculations and also oversees BMI’s TV and cable payment system. She has led the development of new distribution methodologies and digital tools for BMI and manages the organization’s writer/publisher administration and research departments. She’s charged with creating efficient systems for the repertoire and customer service for BMI’s affiliates.”

Also a vital member of CISAC, the international coalition of rights societies, Smith told the magazine that CISAC’s recent summit “reaffirmed for her that the societies will continue to ‘fight for the protection of the creators whose contributions are such a part of the fabric of our society.’”
