Josh Charles Strives to Help New Orleans Heal
The devastation left behind by Hurricane Katrina prompted many individuals to wonder how they could help the New Orleans community rebuild. For BMI singer, composer, and pianist Josh Charles, the need to act was especially strong: A protégée of BMI legend and New Orleans icon Dr. John, Charles had moved to New Orleans only a week before the storm hit. Forced to relocate to Brooklyn, he decided to compose a song exploring Katrina’s aftermath a few months later.
Dubbed “Healing Time,” the single exudes hope, aiming to serve as a comfort to those grappling with changed lives after the storm. It’s available through Amazon.com and iTunes, and Amazon has generously waived its standard 30% royalty so that all proceeds generated by sales of the song may be funneled into New Orleans’ recovery efforts.
High-profile coverage of “Healing Time” from USA Today and CNN, as well as a live performance on Good Morning America featuring the Boys and Girls Choir of Harlem, has also buoyed Charles’ inspired campaign.
"It's going to take a lot of healing time for this city to come back to life,” he told USA Today. “I wanted to be part of that, to give back to a city that gave me so much."
