‘Spring Awakening’ Tops Drama Desk Awards
Spring Awakening, with music and lyrics by BMI composers Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, swept the 2007 Drama Desk Awards for musical theatre. Sheik won for Outstanding Music, Sater for Outstanding Lyrics and the show itself for Outstanding Musical. These achievements may well be a reflection of the upcoming Tony Awards, where Spring Awakening leads the pack with 11 nominations.
A special Drama Desk Award was also given to John Kander and the late Fred Ebb for “42 years of excellence in advancing the art of the musical theater.”
