BMI today announced the music performing rights organization's 3rd Annual Urban Awards will be held August 5 at Club Tropigala at the Fontainebleau Hilton Resorts & Towers in Miami. The invitation-only gala will be the kick-off event to the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Conference & Awards being held August 6-8.

Isaac Hayes

Soul music legend Isaac Hayes will be honored as a BMI ICON for his enduring influence on generations of music makers. Previous honorees include last year's Urban ICON James Brown, country songwriter Bill Anderson, R&B/rock legends Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Little Richard, and the Motown songwriting trio Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland.

The BMI Urban Awards will recognize the songwriters and publishers of the most played urban songs on U.S. radio and television. An Urban Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Publisher of the Year will be named that night. In addition to those awards, BMI will also honor the Top 10 Producers of the past year as well as the BMI writers whose songs reached the #1 spots on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop and Hot Rap Tracks charts.

The 2002 Urban Awards were also held in Miami, as were the 10th Annual BMI Latin Awards on May 5.
