Country Music Comes to Washington
BMI's Dr. David Sanjek was the Chair and Commentator for the panel “Girls With Guitars: Gender and the Creation of Country Music Culture,” held recently at the 2001 American Studies Association meeting in Washington, DC. Under discussion were the careers of Minnie Pearl and Tammy Wynette, as well as the activities of fan clubs devoted to country music before the formation of the Country Music Association in 1960. Dr. Sanjek also attended the reception for the “Music of the Americas” caucus that he helped to found. This group brings together American Studies scholars interested in all forms of American music.
