Director, Writer Publisher Relations - LA130

Responsibilities / Duties

  • Increases BMI's market share by performing the following duties either personally or through the direction of others.
  • Identify and affiliate new songwriters and songwriter/artists to grow the BMI repertoire in the genres of Pop, Adult Contemporary and Rock, by effectively providing collaborative and creative opportunities between songwriters, writer/producers and writer/artists
  • Exceptional knowledge and working relationships within the songwriter community, music publishing professional managers, record producers, recording studios, producer/writer management and A&R executives to facilitate the relationships between BMI, its affiliates and the music industry.
  • Solid understanding of music industry dynamics and an ability to hear hit tunes and generate weekly reports of creative activities to VP, LA Writer-Publisher Relations Department.
  • Knowledge of copyright to better manage and support the relationship between BMI and its songwriter and music publishing community, as well as participate in existing outreach affiliation programs, including showcases, music industry panels and workshops and seminars.
  • Develop and initiate songwriter/music publishing opportunities by working with industry leaders and managers looking to create new collaborative opportunities between the industry and BMI.
  • Must develop a working understanding of BMI’s policies, practices and royalty distribution system in order to accommodate general email inquiries, general affiliate calls and walk-in meetings.
  • Reviews recorded material sent to BMI by affiliates and compose correspondence in reply.
  • Monitors and analyzes new trends in music, including Billboard chart activity, as instructed and new business development impacting BMI.
  • Works with senior executives on special projects such as showcases, studies and meetings, as directed.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 5 - 7 years experience in the music industry.
  • Ability to analyze songs and music for commercial success
  • Working knowledge of the song and music process from conception to hit status.
  • Working knowledge of music industry trade and professional organizations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working with and maintaining database systems and reports, as well as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Able to establish a constructive and informative relationship with employees, management, writers and publishers
  • Ability to interact professionally with a diverse employee population, and with all levels of staff and management.
  • Able to work independently and with good judgment.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Strong typing and proofreading skills.
