Woody Guthrie Fellowship Program
The Woody Guthrie Fellowship Program seeks to encourage unique exploration into the many facets of Woody Guthrie’s life, legacy, and contribution to American and world culture.
The 8th Annual Woody Guthrie Fellowship will be awarded to one applicant working on a research topic or theme directly related to Guthrie’s life, work, or contribution to American music and world culture. The BMI Foundation, Inc., in cooperation with the Woody Guthrie Foundation, will award up to $5,000 to support scholarly research at the Woody Guthrie Archives in Tulsa, OK.
Scholars pursuing research related to Woody Guthrie’s life, historic context, creative works, and musical influence, as well as his philosophical, political, or humanistic ideals, are encouraged to apply for this prestigious Fellowship.
The George Kaiser Family Foundation has recently acquired the Woody Guthrie Archives research collection, and in 2013 these materials will relocate to a permanent repository in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Archives will re-open to researchers in Spring 2013.
Please Note: The Woody Guthrie Fellowship supports research solely for the purpose of scholarly and/or educational publication.
Application Deadline: February 1, 2013
Fellowship Requirements
- Recipient must have a project-based research topic leading to the creation of an original scholarly publication or product (i.e. book, article, etc.); and
- Research at the Archives must be completed by March 2014;
- Research project must be sufficiently extensive as to require a suggested minimum of two weeks of research at the Woody Guthrie Archives.
Evaluation Process
- All applications postmarked on or before February 1, 2013 will be reviewed by the Woody Guthrie Fellowship Selection Committee.
- Upon review of applications, additional supporting materials (i.e. letters of recommendation, work samples, etc.) may be requested.
- All applicants will be notified regarding the status of their application in March 2013.
- The Fellowship will be awarded on an objective and non-discriminatory basis.
Application Process
To apply for a Fellowship, please submit the following:
- Application Form;
- Cover Letter;
- Project Narrative, clearly indicating the following:
- Concise description of the proposed research project and its significance for scholarship; Current status of the project.
- Synopsis of project, including deliverables;
- Current status of the project; and
- Timeline for completion of project and disseminating of results.
