Lucinda Williams Tries Simplicity on for Size

<dc:subject>Artists, Williams, Lucinda, Musical Styles, Country, Rock, Musicworld, Feature</dc:subject>

Never mind that Lucinda Williams' new album Essence is one of the year's most acclaimed releases. The fact that the 11-song collection exists at all is an impressive achievement, considering Williams' reputation as a perfectionist who tends to linger long over her songwriting and studio work. Indeed, the much-traveled Louisiana-born artist - whom Time magazine recently hailed as "America's Best Songwriter" - has released only six albums in her 22-year recording career.

The fact that Essence follows Williams's previous album, the long-in-the-works Grammy-winning Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, by a mere three years seems to be as much of a surprise to Williams as it is to her fans. As she recently told New York's Daily News, "I was worried about it a little bit, like, what's wrong with this picture? I came up with 14 new songs in a two-month period and I've never done that before. I kept wondering if maybe I had to go back to the drawing board."

Where Car Wheels abounded with Williams's sort of vivid, richly detailed character studies that first won her a rabidly devoted cult following, new songs like "Are You Down," "Reason to Cry," "Lonely Girls" and "Steal Your Love" are intimate, lyrically spare first-person evocations of loss, heartbreak and obsession. "This album was an experiment in breaking from long narratives and feeling comfortable with simplicity," Williams stated in an interview with Newsweek.

As Williams told Spin magazine, Essence's songs were largely inspired by "the breakup of a relationship. It kind of opened things up. . . . I'm always writing in my head. A lot of stuff goes in there and just stays in my subconscious, and then I have to be in a certain frame of mind when I'm writing."

Williams has also said that the album's pared-down songwriting approach was partially inspired by Bob Dylan's seminal 1998 comeback Time Out of Mind. "It's just a different approach to the writing. It's more about the groove and the melody, and everything's a lot more sparse," she told Entertainment Weekly. "It was real liberating for me to get to that place with these new songs, because at first I was kind of questioning it. Like 'Are You Down.' Four little bitty verses that I then repeat. My first thought was, 'Well, this is a good idea for a song, but I have to fill it in.' And somehow I got to this place where I just went, 'You know, this is cool like it is. I'm just gonna let it go'."

John Prine

<dc:subject>Artists, Harris, Emmylou, Loveless, Patty, Prine, John, Thornton, Billy Bob, Williams, Lucinda, Musical Styles, Country, Musicworld, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

As he approaches his 30th year as a recording artist, Grammy-winning singer/songwriter John Prine looms as the master of his own destiny. A perennial favorite among critics and musicians, Prine has cultivated a devoted following with his rootsy melodies, Dylanesque vocals and barbwire wit. And though his songs have been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Everly Bros. and Bette Midler, among others, Prine’s biggest achievement may be business related. As founder and president of Oh Boy! Records, he produces and distributes his recordings - a fitting situation for a ruggedly independent man like Prine.

But even by his exacting standards, Prine’s latest album is a bold move. In Spite of Ourselves finds the singer interpreting 16 honky-tonk classics originally recorded by country legends like George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Jim Reeves and Tex Ritter. To make the concept even more interesting, Prine performs duets with acclaimed country divas such as Emmylou Harris, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless and Lucinda Williams. Says Prine: “I sat down and made myself a dream list of duet partners, then we started calling people up. To my surprise, they all said yes. I like singing with girls. It kinda takes the edge off my voice.”

For Prine, In Spite of Ourselves marks a triumphant return to the recording fold. The singer, who recently rebounded from cancer surgery, has reemerged with a vengeance. Aside from the critically acclaimed In Spite of Ourselves, Prine has scored a role in Billy Bob Thornton‘s upcoming Miramax film, Daddy & Them.

Singer/songwriter Cindy Bullens knows only too well about pain. After doing nothing but cry for the first few months after the death of her 11-year-old daughter, Jessie Bullens-Crewe, in March of 1996, she picked up her guitar and wrote the title track to Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth. The album, released on Bullens' Blue Lobster label, sold out the first 1,000 special edition copies, with all proceeds going to the foundation set up in her daughter's name to benefit the Maine Children's Cancer Program.

Cindy's recording career dates back to 1979 with the release of her debut album, Desire Wire, which brought her a Grammy nomination for the single "Survivor." She was also nominated for a Grammy for her lead vocal contributions on the soundtrack to Grease.

Bullens, who has performed and recorded with some of the greatest names in music, including Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker and Bryan Adams, enlisted the help of some of these long-time friends for what has turned out to be a very emotional and self-therapeutic album. Both Raitt and Adams lend backing vocals on various songs, along with Beth Neilson Chapman, Lucinda Williams and Rodney Crowell (who also produced three of the tracks).

Says Raitt, "It's such an unbelievable gift to watch someone transform such agony into such purity.
