Today, firmly ensconced as one of modern rock’s most cherished acts — Entertainment Weekly classified last year’s album The Con (Vapor/Sire) as “angsty, catchy pop” — the pair continues to tour incessantly, always keeping an eye on the business end of things.

“We’ve managed ourselves for years and I have a high comprehension for everything that’s involved in doing what we do,” reflects Tegan Quin, who, alongside her sister, writes all the group’s material. “I think that over the years we’ve definitely been of the school of artists that are very involved. I get cc’d on hundreds of emails everyday from my management and we approve everything; there’s nothing that doesn’t go through our business.”

The winsome tunes to be found on The Con found a readymade audience, as five songs from the pair’s previous album, 2005’s So Jealous (Vapor/Sanctuary), were heavily featured on ABC's hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy. It’s continued a stretch of impressive accomplishments, from being a key part of Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair tours to playing this year’s Coachella and Bonnaroo festivals.

Tegan says she takes pains to eliminate personal pronouns from her lyrics. “I would never put someone’s name in, and I feel almost like by saying ‘she’ or ‘he’ I would be limiting the song,” she says. “If you keep it somewhat general, it’s very easy to relate it to other things.”

Looking ahead, Tegan says she’s into being a singer/songwriter for the long haul.

“It’s not like, ‘Oh I’ve been at this stupid job for so long I guess I’ll just stay,’” she says. “It’s more like, ‘I love this job and I’m not sure exactly what I could find to do that would inspire me more.”

Perkins is undoubtedly one of the freshest, most prolific songwriters to hit the U.S. from our North American neighbor. Consistently delighting audiences with her enthusiastic performances, her "take no prisoners" attitude, and her contagious melodic rock, Perkins is set for fame. Her sound, a vigorous hybrid of Linkin Park and Sarah McLachlan, is as dynamic as it is emotive.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Perkins began her career at a young age, acting in plays such as Annie and Les Miserables, but her destiny was always in music. As soon as she could, the gregarious artist made a move for California, performing at prominent venues like the Roxy, the Troubadour and the Hard Rock Café, giving birth to the infectious six-track EP, Broken Window (2005).

Mariah Carey's multi-platinum comeback album, The Emancipation of Mimi, and its smash single "We Belong Together," helped the pop singer score three of the most coveted Grammy nominations: Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The hit ballad also picked up mentions for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, while Mimi added Best Contemporary R&B Album to Carey's haul.

Rapper Kanye West continued his red hot streak, also earning nominations in the Album and Record of the Year categories with his sophomore release Late Registration and the hit "Gold Digger," respectively. He will compete against himself for the Album of the Year title as a producer on Carey's disc. As a songwriter, West will battle for the Best Rap Song crown with his "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," as well as Best R&B Song as a co-writer on the Alicia Keys track "Unbreakable."

Georgia-born Peyroux was raised in Paris and New York, and honed her performing talents playing on the streets of Paris before recording Dreamland . The album showcased a style that reaches back to the torch songs of Billie Holliday and Bessie Smith and then invests them with contemporary currency. She soon landed on the line-up of Lilith Fair as well as a slew of jazz festivals, and opened shows for artists like Sarah McLachlan.

"I could've kept running with it," Peyroux says, "but instead I stepped back and took a breather." She continued to perform in clubs and on the street, further honing her style.

Her artistic maturity shines on Careless Love , a set that mixes smoky blues ballads and French cabaret. It features songs both old (blues founding father W.C. Handy's title number and Hank Williams's "Weary Blues") and newer (Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love" and Elliot Smith's "Behind the Bars"), as well as her songwriting collaboration with her producer Larry Klein and Grammy-winning songwriter Jesse Harris, "Don't Wait Too Long," which was featured in the movie Monster-In-Law .

Tracks from the album have also been featured on NBC's "Crossing Jordan," HBO's "Family Bonds" and Showtime's "Queer As Folk." As with her last release, Peyroux has won high critical praise with Careless Love , which has already spent some six months in the Top 3 of the Billboard Traditional Jazz charts.

The writers and publishers of the 50 most performed songs of the past year were recognized, plus the overall song, songwriter and publisher winners. A highlight of the gala, staged at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, was a tribute to songwriter/artist Paul Simon, who was named a BMI Icon.

3 Doors Down	Lil Jon

"Here Without You" won the title of BMI Pop Song of the Year, with songwriters Brad Arnold, Todd Harrell, Chris Henderson and Matt Roberts of the group 3 Doors Down accepting; this distinction is given to the song tallying the most feature broadcast performances during the eligibility period. Published by Escatawpa Songs and Songs of Universal, Inc. and included on 3 Doors Down's Republic/Universal CD Away From the Sun, "Here Without You" has already been certified as a BMI Million-Air (with two million broadcast performances) and was previously honored as BMI's 2004 Most Performed Song on College Radio. Lead singer Brad Arnold was also named Songwriter of the Year at the 2002 BMI Pop Awards.

Lil Jon wrote four songs on the Most Performed List of 50 to collect the BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year crown. The songs earning him the title were "Damn!" (YoungBloodZ featuring Lil Jon), "Freek-A-Leek" (Petey Pablo), "Get Low" (Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz featuring the Ying Yang Twins) and "Yeah!" (Usher featuring Ludacris and Lil Jon).

Of the 88 songwriters who received 2005 BMI Pop Awards, two were triple winners: Chad Kroeger (SOCAN) of Nickelback and Sham. Other writer/artists earning awards included Michelle Branch, Five for Fighting, Linkin Park, Sarah McLachlan, Pete Townshend (PRS), Shania Twain, Maroon 5, Los Lonely Boys, R. Kelly, Seal (PRS), Lil' Kim, Evanescence, the White Stripes, Fountains of Wayne, Mario Winans and the Black Eyed Peas.

Paul Simon was saluted as a BMI Icon for his "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers." In a career dating back to the 1950s, Paul Simon has established himself among the best and most popular songwriters of the rock era. His songs have bookmarked moments in the lives of millions, whether with words of love, longing, humor, politics or, above all, hope. He has incorporated the rhythms of his native New York with those from as far away as Brazil and South Africa.

For his efforts, he is a 12-time Grammy winner, a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee (as Simon & Garfunkel and as a solo artist), the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, an Oscar nominee, an Emmy Award winner, and the much-honored co-founder of the Children's Health Fund. His songwriting catalog has earned 39 BMI Awards -- including multiple citations for "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Mrs. Robinson," "Scarborough Fair" and "The Sound of Silence" -- and amassed nearly 75 million broadcast airplays, according to BMI surveys.

After a video tribute, the musical salute to Simon featured performances by 2004 Icon recipient Brian Wilson (who sang "The Sound of Silence"), British sensation Joss Stone ("Mother and Child Reunion"), Adam Levine and James Valentine of the Grammy-winning band Maroon 5 ("Homeward Bound") and soul gospel diva Yolanda Adams ("Bridge Over Troubled Water").

Simon enters the elite company of previously praised BMI Icons, including Bill Anderson, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Isaac Hayes, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Loretta Lynn, Carlos Santana, Dolly Parton, Al Green, Van Morrison and Brian Wilson.

EMI Music Publishing (EMI-Blackwood Music, Inc./EMI-Stone Agate Music), with 11 award songs, claimed the BMI Pop Publisher of the Year prize, given to the publishing concern with the highest percentage of copyright ownership in award songs. EMI's winning songs were "100 Years," "Bright Lights," "Damn!," "Freek-A-Leek," "Get Low," "Heaven," "I Don't Wanna Know," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Into You," "Unwell" and "Where Is the Love." EMI Chairman & CEO Martin Bandier accepted the crystal trophy.

Other publishers garnering three or more awards were Universal Music Publishing (Irving Music/Songs of Universal, Inc./Universal-Songs of PolyGram International, Inc.); Warner/Chappell Music Group (Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp. and Rick's Music, Inc.); Careers-BMG Music Publishing, Inc./Loco De Amor Music/Zomba Songs Inc.; and White Rhino Music.

In addition to Song of the Year "Here Without You," BMI recognized the performance achievements of two other songs. "Someday" by Nickelback earned Most Performed Song on College Radio kudos for songwriters Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger, Ryan Peake and Ryan Vikedal of the group and publisher Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," the most performed composition in BMI's repertoire of 6.5 million musical works, was certified as a 10 Million-Air, meaning it has been broadcast 10 million times. Whether crafting succulent pop hooks for *NSYNC, composing intricate scores with 80-piece orchestras for films like The Fast and the Furious , collaborating with Sting on a track from the superstar’s album, or remixing tracks for Madonna, Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, BT is demonstrating the sort of broad creative range that is the hallmark of a true artist.

It's all an amazing accomplishment for a singer, writer and guitarist who was The Offspring of a Greek father (who ran a London restaurant) and Swedish mother. Raised and educated in Sweden, where his studies included classical music, Stevens landed in England during his late teens. Songs from his debut album, Matthew and Son , made him a U.K. pop star while a hit version of "There Goes My Baby" by The Tremeloes began his decades-long string of high profile covers.

After a bout with tuberculosis in 1969, Stevens reemerged as a unique folk-rock troubadour whose gentle style nonetheless conveyed songs of stunning depth, intensity and resonance. Albums like Mona Bone Jakon , Tea for The Tillerman , Teaser and The Firecat and others made him a staple on American pop and album radio as well as an international star. A longtime spiritual bent led him to convert to Islam in 1979 and not long after change his name and leave the music business. A decade later he made headlines with a statement supporting Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa (Islamic death sentence) against novelist Salman Rushdie that Stevens later claimed to have been misinterpreted. The controversial declaration caused many U.S. radio stations to pull the music of Cat Stevens from their playlists. But the lasting strength of his creations and heart found within them has overcome that situation.

Last year Stevens returned briefly to the pop music scene to re-record "Peace Train" for an album to benefit the children of Iraq that also included contributions from Paul McCartney, David Bowie, George Michael and other British pop stars. “'Peace Train' is a song I wrote, the message of which continues to breeze thunderously through the hearts of millions of human beings," says Stevens, "and there is a powerful need for people to feel that gust of hope rise up again."

"A lot of these songs are about transition," she says, "the turning over of the rock, what's underneath, the murky, shadowy uncertainty where everything looks very different."

The intervening years were challenging, to say the least: McLachlan lost Her mother to cancer and, shortly thereafter, became a mother herself. " It's still all a blur to me -- it has less to do with the album tracks and more to do with my recent state of mind," she says. "I'm sure in five or six years there's going to be a record about all of this, but it's too close right now."

The changes in her life resulted in a new approach to songwriting: Forsaking her standard approach of writing on guitar, McLachlan composed all 10 of Afterglow ’s tracks on piano. "I used to go live in a cabin in the woods for eight months and write and write and write," she adds. "Now, spending time with [daughter] India means that I have two hours in the day where I'm not focused on her, yet even then my focus is continually being brought back to her. All of my old tricks didn't apply anymore in songwriting, and I really had to find that new way."

Created over a two-year period, the material on Afterglow retains McLachlan’s trademark lush production and emotive lyrics, adding a fresh, more mature introspection. From lead single, "Fallen," to the whispered tones of "Answer," McLachlan mines a rich vein of material that seems to hold endless opportunities for further exploration.

McLachlan’s philanthropy has also continued. Most famous for masterminding the Lilith Fair festivals, she also maintains the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program, which provides free music education classes to inner-city youths affected by budget cuts. "It feels so good to be able to see their lives impacted, and I'm the first one at the recitals giving them a standing ovation," she enthuses. "There's hardly any joy comparable."

Looking forward to a summer tour, McLachlan says, "Taking a break and walking away was the best thing I could have done. It brought me to a much happier place, and I'm loving music again."

Rock band Evanescence also topped this year's list, picking up five nominations including Best New Artist and Best Rock Album for their multi-platinum breakthrough release, Fallen. Other five-time nominees were rapper Eminem and the late Warren Zevon. Also receiving multiple nods were Willie Nelson, Jack White of The White Stripes (three with his band and one individual), and classical composer Jose Serebrier with four each and Christina Aguilera with three, including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her smash hit, "Beautiful."

The 46th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2004, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on CBS from 8-11:30 p.m. on the East and West Coasts.
