As On My Way makes resolutely clear, Latin rock is no mere experiment for deSol. Featuring the talents of singer/songwriter Albie Monterrosa, Jams Guerrero (percussion, vocals), Andy Letke (keyboards), Chris Guice (bass), Kevin Ansell (guitars), Ron Shields (drums) and Ray Turull (percussion), On My Way seduces with its life-affirming tunes sung in English, Spanish and hybridized "Spanglish." From the chanted choruses and Morse-code guitar riffs that animate the title track, to rousing numbers like “San Juan” and “Mona Lisa,” and ballads such as “Good Night Love” and “House of Texas,” On My Way triumphantly advances deSol’s south-of-the-border rock agenda while contemporizing the positive vibes of 1970s Top 40 radio.

Emerging in 2003 with their self-titled debut album, deSol captivated radio listeners from the start. Their premiere single, "Karma," was a Top 5 Triple A radio hit. A holiday single, "Little Drummer Boy,” set a record as the highest debut chart entrance since James Taylor in 2004. Taking to the road, deSol opened for R.E.M., the Legendary Wailers and Los Lonely Boys, while performing a "buzzworthy" LA Times showcase at the 2005 South by Southwest festival.

Throughout their travels, the band won rave media notices. The Philadelphia Inquirer stated, “not since Los Lobos… has a Latin band sounded as fiery — and so ready to mess with tradition — as deSol.”

As evidenced by their recent single “Sing It All Night,” the Jersey band is biding their time until fortune inevitably comes knocking. As Monterrosa sings: “One day, gonna write the song that’s gonna keep ‘em cheering ‘til they turn out the lights/until then we’re troubadours chasing down a feeling, sending music into the night...”

The two-day program covers a timely assortment of topics including a review of the Texas music and film industry, recent court decisions and legislation, sound recording copyright, estate planning for copyright owners, anatomy of a copyright infringement case, interpreting recording contracts in the digital era, film distribution, and a review of the Los Lonely Boys' rise to fame. A special luncheon award presentation on Friday will honor Jay L. Cooper with the 2006 Texas Star Award for Outstanding Contribution and Achievement in the field of entertainment law. The presentation will not only pay homage to the esteemed attorney, but will also offer attendees the opportunity to gain some insight from the man himself.

A former president of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, Jay Cooper is a shareholder in the Greenberg Traurig LLP law firm and chair of the firm's West Coast Entertainment Practice. His practice's primary focus on music industry, motion picture, television, multimedia and intellectual property issues necessitates prescient study and action by Mr. Cooper-a pursuit his peers and business associates agree he has embraced with relish and success. BMI staged its 54th Annual Pop Awards on May 16, with top honors given to BMI Icons Crosby, Stills & Nash; Jesse Carmichael, Ryan Dusick, Adam Levine and Mickey Madden of Maroon 5 and Lil Jon as Songwriters of the Year; "She Will Be Loved" as Song of the Year; and EMI Music as Publisher of the Year. Hosted by BMI President/ CEO Del Bryant and Los Angeles VP/GM Barbara Cane at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, the black-tie dinner recognized the writers and publishers of the past year's 50 most performed pop songs from BMI's catalog of more than 6.5 million compositions.

A highlight of the gala ceremony featured a musical tribute to legendary singing trio Crosby, Stills & Nash, who were honored as BMI Icons for their "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers." The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, whose signature three-part harmony has endured for more than three decades, join an elite list of previous BMI Icons that includes Paul Simon, James Brown, Brian Wilson, Isaac Hayes, Dolly Parton and Carlos Santana.

The musical partnership of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash has produced some of the most timeless rock songs ever written, including "Marrakesh Express," "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Helplessly Hoping," "Guinnevere," "Teach Your Children," "Wooden Ships," "Dark Star" and "Just a Song Before I Go." Called "the voice of an entire generation," CSN has just announced a summer reunion tour with Neil Young.

Pop-rockers Maroon 5 were joined on stage by rapper Lil Jon to collect their BMI Songwriter of the Year Crystals for placing three songs each on the most performed list of 50. The trio of tracks earning Maroon 5 members Jesse Carmichael, Ryan Dusick, Adam Levine and Mickey Madden the prestigious title were "Sunday Morning," their two-time BMI Pop Award-winning smash, "This Love," and Song of the Year "She Will Be Loved."

Lil Jon picked up his third Songwriter of the Year win - he was both BMI's top Pop and Urban writer in 2005 - for penning "Lovers and Friends" (Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz featuring Usher & Ludacris), "Goodies" (Ciara featuring Petey Pablo) and "Salt Shaker" (Ying Yang Twins featuring Lil Jon), the latter two of which also made the list of top songs at the 2005 BMI Urban Awards. He was also honored at that ceremony as writer of the Song of the Year ("Yeah!"), as well as named one of BMI's Top 10 Urban Producers.

Included on Maroon 5's multi-platinum debut, Songs About Jane, "She Will Be Loved" was named BMI Pop Song of the Year for scoring the most airplay of any song on the most performed list during the award period. Co-written by the band's four BMI members, and published by Careers-BMG Music Publishing and February Twenty-Second Music, "She Will Be Loved" earned Maroon 5 their second Grammy this past February for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal; they were named Best New Artist the previous year.

EMI Music Publishing (EMI-Blackwood Music, Inc./EMI-Hastings Catalog, Inc./Stone Diamond Music) claimed its second consecutive BMI Pop Publisher of the Year prize with 18 songs on the top 50 list, giving the publishing giant the highest percentage of copyright ownership in award songs. EMI Chairman & CEO Martin Bandier accepted the company's 11th BMI Pop Publisher Crystal.

In addition to the Song of the Year, BMI also recognized the performance achievements of two other songs: "Beverly Hills" earned Most Performed Song on College Radio kudos for songwriter Rivers Cuomo of Weezer and publisher E.O. Smith Music, and "1, 2 Step," written by BMI Top 10 Urban Producer Jazze Pha and published by Bubba Gee Music, Noontime Tunes and Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp., received BMI's very first Internet Song of the Year award by tallying the most hits on BMI-licensed web sites during the award period.

Three other songs besides "This Love" took home a second BMI Pop Award, including "Heaven" by Los Lonely Boys, which also won last year; D.H.T.'s version of "Listen to Your Heart," which earned a Pop Award in 1990 for the recording by Roxette; and the Hall & Oates remake of "I'll Be Around," which won a Pop Award in 1972 for the original Spinners hit written by Thom Bell and Phil Hurtt.

Another of the ceremony's highlights included a special presentation to 21-year-old Catawba College student Dennis E. Reed, Jr., first place winner of the BMI Foundation's 9th Annual John Lennon Scholarship Awards. The Charlotte, North Carolina native, who got to share the stage with some of music's biggest stars, went home with a $10,000 scholarship for his song, "Out of Control." Established in 1997 by Yoko Ono in conjunction with the BMI Foundation and matched by generous donations from Gibson Musical Instruments, the John Lennon Scholarship program recognizes the talent of young songwriters between the ages of 15 and 24.

Mariah Carey's multi-platinum comeback album, The Emancipation of Mimi, and its smash single "We Belong Together," helped the pop singer score three of the most coveted Grammy nominations: Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The hit ballad also picked up mentions for Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, while Mimi added Best Contemporary R&B Album to Carey's haul.

Rapper Kanye West continued his red hot streak, also earning nominations in the Album and Record of the Year categories with his sophomore release Late Registration and the hit "Gold Digger," respectively. He will compete against himself for the Album of the Year title as a producer on Carey's disc. As a songwriter, West will battle for the Best Rap Song crown with his "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," as well as Best R&B Song as a co-writer on the Alicia Keys track "Unbreakable."

Soul singer John Legend is up for Best New Artist, Best R&B Album for his debut Get Lifted, and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Song of the Year for "Ordinary People," which he also co-wrote. The "BMI Presents..." showcase will be held Friday, August 12 at the Hard Rock Café (215 Peachtree Street NE) featuring some of the South East's most captivating and unique songwriters in the urban genre. The line-up includes BMI artists Female at 8pm, Britany at 8:15pm, Ignysh'n at 8:30pm, Kalena at 8:45pm, Pricilla Jones at 9pm, Caleb at 9:15pm, ProBono Records recording artist and Atlanta-based soul singer/songwriter Nessa Morgan at 9:40pm, Free Sol at 10:10pm and Kedar Entertainment Group recording artist Algebra at 10:40pm.

Also being held on Friday, August 12 is the "See A Penny, Pick it Up: How Performing Rights Societies Collect and Distribute YOUR Money" panel featuring BMI's Erica Tompkins, Associate Director, Writer/Publisher Relations, New York. The panel will take place in Salon D at the Sheraton from 4:00pm to 5:30pm.

BMI will also co-sponsor an invitation-only VIP reception on Friday night at Smith's Old Bar (1578 Piedmont Avenue) for conference attendees.

On Saturday, August 13 from 12:00pm to 1:30pm in Salon D&E, BMI will present the "How I Wrote That Song" panel moderated by BMI's J.W. Johnson, Senior Director, Writer/Publisher Relations, New York. Other panelists include Octone recording artist Michael Tolcher, Motown recording artist Kem, and Kedar Entertainment Group recording artist Algebra.

Also on Saturday, BMI's Diane J. Almodovar, Assistant Vice President, Latin Music, will speak on the "Introduction to the Latino Music Industry, Latin Sol at Underground" panel from 2:00pm to 3:30pm in Salon E. In addition to Almodovar, the panel will include moderator Leila Cobo, Latin Music Editor, Billboard Magazine; Jose Till�n, VP of Music and Talent, MTV Latin America; John Echevarr�a, President, Universal Music Latino; Gerardo Vergara, Director of Marketing, Univisi�n Music Group; and Gustavo Arenas, CEO, Arena Fina Music Productions.

Rounding out BMI's speaking slots is Catherine Brewton, BMI's Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations, Atlanta, who will participate on the "Women's Panel: Crazy, Sexy, Cool! Female Artists of the New Millennium" from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. Brewton will be joined by Jive recording artist Rasheeda, T-Boz from multi-platinum recording group TLC, and Miss B.

Of the 300 acts chosen to perform at this year's conference, 95% are unsigned, making Atlantis Music Conference & Festival one of the only events in the nation still dedicated to showcasing new artists almost exclusively. AMC+F also provides an outlet for up-and-coming acts to display their talents in front of some of today's most influential industry executives. The writers and publishers of the 50 most performed songs of the past year were recognized, plus the overall song, songwriter and publisher winners. A highlight of the gala, staged at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, was a tribute to songwriter/artist Paul Simon, who was named a BMI Icon.

3 Doors Down	Lil Jon

"Here Without You" won the title of BMI Pop Song of the Year, with songwriters Brad Arnold, Todd Harrell, Chris Henderson and Matt Roberts of the group 3 Doors Down accepting; this distinction is given to the song tallying the most feature broadcast performances during the eligibility period. Published by Escatawpa Songs and Songs of Universal, Inc. and included on 3 Doors Down's Republic/Universal CD Away From the Sun, "Here Without You" has already been certified as a BMI Million-Air (with two million broadcast performances) and was previously honored as BMI's 2004 Most Performed Song on College Radio. Lead singer Brad Arnold was also named Songwriter of the Year at the 2002 BMI Pop Awards.

Lil Jon wrote four songs on the Most Performed List of 50 to collect the BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year crown. The songs earning him the title were "Damn!" (YoungBloodZ featuring Lil Jon), "Freek-A-Leek" (Petey Pablo), "Get Low" (Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz featuring the Ying Yang Twins) and "Yeah!" (Usher featuring Ludacris and Lil Jon).

Of the 88 songwriters who received 2005 BMI Pop Awards, two were triple winners: Chad Kroeger (SOCAN) of Nickelback and Sham. Other writer/artists earning awards included Michelle Branch, Five for Fighting, Linkin Park, Sarah McLachlan, Pete Townshend (PRS), Shania Twain, Maroon 5, Los Lonely Boys, R. Kelly, Seal (PRS), Lil' Kim, Evanescence, the White Stripes, Fountains of Wayne, Mario Winans and the Black Eyed Peas.

Paul Simon was saluted as a BMI Icon for his "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers." In a career dating back to the 1950s, Paul Simon has established himself among the best and most popular songwriters of the rock era. His songs have bookmarked moments in the lives of millions, whether with words of love, longing, humor, politics or, above all, hope. He has incorporated the rhythms of his native New York with those from as far away as Brazil and South Africa.

For his efforts, he is a 12-time Grammy winner, a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee (as Simon & Garfunkel and as a solo artist), the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, an Oscar nominee, an Emmy Award winner, and the much-honored co-founder of the Children's Health Fund. His songwriting catalog has earned 39 BMI Awards -- including multiple citations for "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Mrs. Robinson," "Scarborough Fair" and "The Sound of Silence" -- and amassed nearly 75 million broadcast airplays, according to BMI surveys.

After a video tribute, the musical salute to Simon featured performances by 2004 Icon recipient Brian Wilson (who sang "The Sound of Silence"), British sensation Joss Stone ("Mother and Child Reunion"), Adam Levine and James Valentine of the Grammy-winning band Maroon 5 ("Homeward Bound") and soul gospel diva Yolanda Adams ("Bridge Over Troubled Water").

Simon enters the elite company of previously praised BMI Icons, including Bill Anderson, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Isaac Hayes, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Loretta Lynn, Carlos Santana, Dolly Parton, Al Green, Van Morrison and Brian Wilson.

EMI Music Publishing (EMI-Blackwood Music, Inc./EMI-Stone Agate Music), with 11 award songs, claimed the BMI Pop Publisher of the Year prize, given to the publishing concern with the highest percentage of copyright ownership in award songs. EMI's winning songs were "100 Years," "Bright Lights," "Damn!," "Freek-A-Leek," "Get Low," "Heaven," "I Don't Wanna Know," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Into You," "Unwell" and "Where Is the Love." EMI Chairman & CEO Martin Bandier accepted the crystal trophy.

Other publishers garnering three or more awards were Universal Music Publishing (Irving Music/Songs of Universal, Inc./Universal-Songs of PolyGram International, Inc.); Warner/Chappell Music Group (Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp. and Rick's Music, Inc.); Careers-BMG Music Publishing, Inc./Loco De Amor Music/Zomba Songs Inc.; and White Rhino Music.

In addition to Song of the Year "Here Without You," BMI recognized the performance achievements of two other songs. "Someday" by Nickelback earned Most Performed Song on College Radio kudos for songwriters Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger, Ryan Peake and Ryan Vikedal of the group and publisher Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," the most performed composition in BMI's repertoire of 6.5 million musical works, was certified as a 10 Million-Air, meaning it has been broadcast 10 million times. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" was written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and published by ABKCO Music, Inc., Mother Bertha Music, Inc., and Screen Gems-EMI Music, Inc.

Another special presentation was the announcement of the First Place winner of the 2005 John Lennon Scholarship Awards. Sydney Price, a 17-year-old junior at Booker T. Washington High School for the Visual and Performing Arts in

The BMI Icon honors a creator who has been a “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers”; Santana was so honored at the organization’s Latin Awards, held April 21 at The Ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in Las Vegas, the first time the awards have been held in that city.

The Mexican native first came to the United States in the early 1960s, arriving in San Francisco as an established professional guitarist. Combining his talents with several like-minded players, he formed the Santana Blues Band in 1966, with the band’s name shortened to Santana soon afterwards. A high-profile four-night stand at the city’s legendary Fillmore West in 1968 led to a contract with Columbia Records, with its self-titled first release coming out the same month as the band’s Woodstock gig. Santana stayed on the charts for two years, led by singles “Evil Ways” and “Jingo.” Follow-up album Abraxas (1970) hit number one, spawning the Top 10 hits “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va.” By the end of that year, the group had added its seventh member, guitarist Neal Schon (who, with original Santana member Gregg Rolie, would eventually leave to form Journey). Hit albums Santana III and Caravanserai followed.

By this time, Carlos Santana had become deeply involved with guru Sri Chinmoy, adopting the name “Devadip” (meaning “the eye, the lamp, and the light of God") and recording the album Love Devotion Surrender with fellow Chinmoy devotee John McLaughlin of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This project, along with parts of Caravanserai , represented a shift in Santana’s playing toward a more fluid, jazz style, a shift made even more obvious by 1974’s Illuminations , recorded with John Coltrane’s widow Alice.

Several group albums found the restless spirit trying on a number of styles (as well as an ever-shifting group of sidemen), resulting in such Top 40 singles as “Winning,” “Hold On,” “You Know That I Love You” and a cover of The Zombies’ “She’s Not There.” In 1987 he won his first Grammy Award (Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the title track of his solo album Blues for Salvador).

Following several other albums and record labels, in 1999 Santana signed with Arista Records, headed by Clive Davis, who had originally signed the group to Columbia.  The musical masterminds combined their talents to produce Supernatural , easily Santana’s biggest-selling album (10 million and counting), which won eight Grammys along the way (including Album of the Year and Record and Song of the Year for “Smooth,” his collaboration with matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas.

Supernatural’s all-star lineup strategy (which included Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews and Wyclef Jean) was repeated with 2002’s Shaman , another best-seller whose guest lineup included Thomas, Michelle Branch, Seal and even Placido Domingo. (The album resulted in another Grammy, this time for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, for the Branch-sung “The Game of Love.”) Those accomplishments were capped by Santana’s being named the Latin Grammys’ “Person of the Year” in 2004.

Of receiving that award — as well as the long list of other recognitions he’s received — Santana remains typically humble. “I’ve been repeating for a long time that I am a beam of light that comes from the mind of God,” he told the Associated Press; as a result, “I don’t have to squirm or interrupt people when they give me a compliment. I can say, ‘Thank you so much.  And I’m very happy that my presence can bring joy into your life.’”

Santana has also maintained his charitable work, donating over $2 million from his Shaman tour to fight AIDS in Africa.

And of course there’s the music: Santana is currently working on a number of projects, including an all-instrumental album and another collaborative effort that may include Sting and Los Lonely Boys. “It’s like seven to 10 things that I’m working on, but I’m not confused or scattered,” he says.

CMT viewers began voting on February 16 for their favorite videos on CMT.com to determine the finalists, and later the winners. The first round of voting will end on March 10, when the votes will be tabulated and the field will be narrowed to four finalists in each category.

Ten-time nominee Kanye West took home three awards, including Best Rap Song for his hit "Jesus Walks" (co-written with Miri Ben-Ari) from his multiplatinum release The College Dropout, which earned the Best Rap Album title. His Best R&B Song win, also a songwriter award, was shared with BMI co-writer Harold Lilly for the smash "You Don't Know My Name."

Pop-rockers Maroon5 took home the prestigious Best New Artist Grammy, a surprise to even the band's own members. When lead singer, Adam Levine, accepted the award, he commented: "Kanye West, I want to thank you so much for being unbelievable."

BMI artists once again dominated the Latin category, winning five of the six awards, including Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album (Street Signs) by multicultural, hip-hop outfit Ozomatli and Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album by Tejano-norte�o fusion band Intocable. Cuban bassist Israel "Cachao" L�pez's �Ahora S�! was named Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra won for Best Salsa/Merengue Album. The Best Tejano Album win went to BMI composers David Lee Garza, Joel Guzman and Sunny Sauceda.

BMI jazz artists also had a strong showing, winning Grammys in four out of six fields, with the Best Jazz Instrumental Album statuette going to McCoy Tyner, Gary Bartz, Terence Blanchard and Christian McBride for Illuminations. Herbie Hancock picked up his ninth career Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Charlie Haden's release Land of the Sun was named Best Latin Jazz Album and Bill Frisell's Unspeakable earned the Best Contemporary Jazz Album title.

Winning two Grammys each were classical composer John Adams and BMI Icon Loretta Lynn. This is legendary country singer's second Grammy; she won in 1971 for her collaboration with Conway Twitty. Her album, Van Lear Rose, earned her the Best Country Album trophy, which she accepted with the album's producer Jack White of the White Stripes. The pair also won Best Country Collaboration With Vocals for the track "Portland Oregon."

Newcomers Los Lonely Boys opened the Grammy show with their #1 breakthrough smash "Heaven," which earned the Tex-Mex brothers the trophy for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Hip-hop party band the Black Eyed Peas picked up a Grammy for "Let's Get It Started," named Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group, while crunk rapper Lil Jon received a Grammy nod for his collaboration on the Usher hit "Yeah!".

Other BMI winners included Basement Jaxx [PRS] (Best Electronic/Dance Album), Tim McGraw (Best Male Country Vocal Performance), The Blind Boys Of Alabama (Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album), Brave Combo (Best Polka Album), and BMI Icon Brian Wilson, who also earned his very first Grammy. The Beach Boys leader was also honored on February 11 as the Person of the Year at the annual MusiCares dinner, which cited him as "one of the most important songwriters and recording artists of our time."
