BMI will salute duo Daryl Hall & John Oates as BMI Icons at its 56th annual Pop Awards, slated for Tuesday, May 20 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. Hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President & General Manager, Writer/Publisher Relations, Los Angeles, Barbara Cane, the invitation-only event will also honor the songwriters and publishers of the past year’s most-performed pop songs in the United States. The evening’s capstone will take the form of a stirring musical tribute to Daryl Hall & John Oates.

BMI Icons are selected because of their “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” As BMI Icons, Daryl Hall & John Oates will join elite ranks that include the Bee Gees, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul Simon, Merle Haggard, Brian Wilson, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Ray Davies, Carlos Santana and Dolly Parton.

The effervescent popularity of Daryl Hall and John Oates’s magical collaborations springs from the duo’s devout passion for Philly soul and buoyant pop harmonies. Warmly accessible and expertly polished, Daryl Hall & John Oates’s smooth production utilizes undeniable hooks and innate contemporary lyrical sensibility. The resulting eight no. 1 singles, three double-platinum and two platinum albums catapulted the pair into pop superstardom; in 1987, Daryl Hall & John Oates became the #1 selling duo in pop music, according to the RIAA. Skilled songwriters, Daryl Hall & John Oates are both members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, together boasting 24 BMI Pop Awards and a catalog studded with 14 BMI Million-Air award songs, including “She’s Gone,” “Everytime You Go Away,” “Kiss On My List,” “Maneater” and “Sara Smile.” They have prompted a surge of interest and homage from a diverse bevy of new artists, who cite the pair as definitive influences. Restless creators, Daryl Hall & John Oates have spent much of the last decade touring throughout the world.

In addition to the Icon, BMI will recognize Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year during the evening, along with the recipient of the BMI Foundation’s John Lennon Scholarship. Pop Award winners from previous years include Maroon 5, R.
Aly and AJ

<dc:subject>Aly and AJ, Linkin Park, Pop, Singer-Songwriter, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

In 2006, Blender magazine, America’s self-proclaimed “ultimate guide to music,” published a profile of the Disney singer/songwriter duo Aly & AJ. Blender is renowned for poking good-natured fun at pop stars, yet try as it might to cloak its Aly & AJ piece in fashionable cynicism, the magazine couldn’t conceal its respect for the sibling popsters.

Hailing from the same suburban Los Angeles enclave that birthed Linkin Park, Hoobastank and Incubus, Alyson (“Aly”) and Amanda Joy (“AJ”) Michalka compose and perform energetic pop songs with just a hint of sneering attitude. In a span of just two years, the duo has released three well-received albums, while their songs and performances have appeared in Disney films like Ice Princess and Herbie: Fully Loaded.

Though Aly & AJ’s 2006 debut album, Into The Rush, sold over a million copies with little support from radio, it remained to be seen if the duo could extend their hitmaking momentum into 2007. All doubts were dispelled when their sophomore album, Imsomniatic, debuted at #15 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The first release from the album, “Potential Break Up Song,” is Aly & AJ’s highest charting single, reaching #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and winning gold certification from the RIAA.

While Aly & AJ loom large on the global pop scene, the guitar-strumming duo has also won kudos for composing songs that subtly yet effectively evince their faith, as evidenced by their single "Never Far Behind," which went to #1 on the Radio & Records Christian CHR chart. In 2006, the duo was nominated for Contemporary Inspirational Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards.

Aly & AJ are co-chairpersons for the Children's Advisory Board of the AmberWatch Foundation. The duo’s leadership role within the revered child safety organization reveals the deep-rooted concern and respect Aly & AJ have for their young fans.

Linkin Park Makes ‘Minutes to Midnight’ Count

      <dc:subject>Linkin Park, Rock, Feature</dc:subject>

Taking their music in a decidedly new direction, Los Angeles-based rap-rockers Linkin Park return to the charts with their third release, Minutes to Midnight. The CD, co-produced by studio master Rick Rubin and band frontman Mike Shinoda, has the sextet shedding their nü-metal moniker in favor of a more straight-ahead, hard-rock sound.

Indeed, there is a marked decrease in Shinoda’s signature rhymes; “Hands Held High” and the intense “Bleed It Out” are the only tunes on which he raps. Even so, eager fans grabbed 623,000 copies of the highly anticipated release on May 15, placing Minutes at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and making it the highest selling album of 2007 in its debut week.

After more than a decade together, the high school pals — rounded out by lead singer Chester Bennington, guitarist Brad Delson, drummer Rob Bourdon, bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell and DJ Joe Hahn — have reinvented themselves, thanks in part to Rubin’s magical touch.

“We’re straying away from a lot of the predictable sounds we’ve had in the past, but there’s no question in your mind when you hear it that it’s Linkin Park,” affirms Bennington, who has all but taken over the vocal reins, showcasing his rare talent for hitting the right notes while simultaneously screaming.

When LP exploded onto the scene in 2000 with their 10-times platinum debut, Hybrid Theory (one of the band’s former names), massive radio hits “In the End,” “Crawling” and “One Step Closer” launched them into superstardom.

That album garnered three Grammy nominations and a subsequent win for Best Hard Rock Performance for “Crawling.” They scored their second Grammy in 2005 with the Jay-Z collaboration, “Numb/Encore,” a remix of both artists’ songs featured on 2004’s platinum-selling joint effort, Collision Course.

In between, Linkin Park released Meteora in 2003, with more than 800,000 copies flying off of shelves in the first week. Chart-toppers like “Somewhere I Belong,” “Breaking the Habit,” “Faint” and “Numb” led to more than four million in sales, adding to an impressive career sales total of over 46 million.

Hoping to continue its colossal success, the group spent more than a year working on Minutes to Midnight — a reference to the Doomsday Clock — writing over 100 demos and eventually settling on 12 tracks that Shinoda describes as a “breakthrough in the development of the band’s sound.”

“We’ve always said we write the music we write so that we can spread our wings as far as we want and try new things and go anywhere,” he adds. “I think we’re really going to prove that with this new record.”

BMI will recognize the Bee Gees as BMI Icons at its 55th annual Pop Awards, to be held Tuesday, May 15 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. Hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President & General Manager, Writer/Publisher Relations, Los Angeles, Barbara Cane, the invitation-only event will also honor the songwriters and publishers of the past year’s top songs. The evening will culminate with an all-star musical tribute to the Bee Gees.

BMI Icons are selected because of their “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” The Bee Gees join an elite list that includes Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul Simon, Merle Haggard, Brian Wilson, James Brown, Carlos Santana and Dolly Parton, to name just a few.

Collectively, Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb boast 109 BMI Pop, Country and Latin Awards. Barry received four BMI Songwriter of the Year awards; Robin shared two of these with him. The trio claims four BMI Song of the Year wins for “Night Fever,” “Too Much Heaven” and the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton duet “Islands in the Stream,” which won in both the pop and country categories. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members have earned international industry accolades, including the prestigious Grammy “Legend” Award. Maurice Gibb’s passing in 2003 led to the Gibbs’ decision to cease performing as the Bee Gees, but their music lives on, enriching generation after generation.

In addition to the Icon, BMI will recognize Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year during the evening, along with the recipient of the BMI Foundation’s John Lennon Scholarship.
Lollapalooza
invades Chicago's Grant Park again this year August 4-6, and BMI

proudly presents a stacked, three-day line-up on its day stage. The only

performing right organization with its own stage at the festival, BMI

takes advantage of this opportunity to showcase 15 up-and-coming bands

from all over the country, including seven buzz bands from the Chicago

area.

Friday begins at 11:15 a.m., and features Chicago-based band the Bon

Byrds and praised for vintage instrumentation, PopMatters.com cheers

that the band mixes "witty lyrics and sly nods to the likes of Elvis

Costello and Pavement," while AllMusic.com proclaims, "The Bon Mots just

        may be Chicago's best-kept secret."

12:30 p.m. ushers in another Chicago troupe, Cameron

enigmatic and the melancholy, all while categorically maintaining a

stark dedication to beauty and self-deprecating humor.

Makeshifte is not for the faint of heart. The 2005 Texas Buzz Award

then swings over and nods to the Beatles, refusing to adopt any one

monotonous sound or voice. A master of several instruments, Stoltz waves

fondly to past icons while planting his feet firmly in 21st century pop.

Billy Joel and Ben Folds, and melds spirited keys with crooner-inspired

vocals. The result jumps vigorously between genres like jazz, funk, rock

BMI Again Posts Record Revenues; $779 Million Is Highest In Industry

BMI this week posted revenues (excluding Landmark Digital Services, LLC) of more
than $779 million for its fiscal year 2005-2006, which ended June 30.
The figure represents an increase of 7 percent over the previous year,
it was announced by Del Bryant, President & CEO of BMI. The revenues
resulted in royalties for distribution to BMI-affiliated songwriters,
composers and publishers of $676 million, an increase of 8.2 percent
over last year. These results represent the largest performing right
income of any copyright organization in the industry.

"I am particularly pleased that our tradition of technology leadership
and consistent attention to cost control have permitted us to deliver an
ever-larger proportion of our licensing income to the songwriters,
composers and copyright owners we represent," Bryant said in making the
announcement. Operational expenses as a percentage of revenues decreased
from 14.2 percent to 13.2 percent, the lowest in BMI's history and among
the lowest of the world's major copyright organizations.

Although total license fees from traditional analog media continued to
increase, revenues from cable, satellite, the Internet and other digital
media surged ahead. Cable and satellite revenue grew by $24 million and
now represents more than 17 percent of the company's total. New media
revenues grew to more than $16 million, an increase of 35 percent over
the prior year. International revenues also hit a new high at $204
million, and general licensing income, from tens of thousands of bars
and restaurants, retail, and service establishments, increased 12
percent over the prior year to more than $86 million.

BMI's revenues are attributable to the diversity, scope and popularity
of the music created by the more than 300,000 songwriters, composers and
music publishers that the company represents. These songwriters
transcend global boundaries and have broad international appeal, and
include such acts as <a href=

Lollapalooza invades Chicago's Grant Park again this year August 4-6, and BMI proudly presents a stacked, three-day line-up on its day stage. The only performing right organization with its own stage at the festival, BMI takes advantage of this opportunity to showcase 15 up-and-coming bands from all over the country, including seven buzz bands from the Chicago area.
Friday begins at 11:15 a.m., and features Chicago-based band the Bon Mots-composers of sugar kissed pop music. Often compared to the Byrds and praised for vintage instrumentation, PopMatters.com cheers that the band mixes "witty lyrics and sly nods to the likes of Elvis Costello and Pavement," while AllMusic.com proclaims, "The Bon Mots just may be Chicago's best-kept secret."

12:30 p.m. ushers in another Chicago troupe, Cameron McGill and What Army. McGill's lyrics and melodies embrace the enigmatic and the melancholy, all while categorically maintaining a stark dedication to beauty and self-deprecating humor.

1:45 to 2:30 p.m. will be dominated by Houston's Makeshifte. Makeshifte is not for the faint of heart. The 2005 Texas Buzz Award winners for the "Musicians' Choice" award cite Hoobastank, Linkin Park and Incubus as key influences of their heavy, guitar-driven tunes led by feverish vocals.

San Francisco's Kelley Soltz follows Makeshifte at 3:00 until 3:45 p.m. Stoltz is capable of channeling Carl Wilson to sinful perfection, then swings over and nods to the Beatles, refusing to adopt any one monotonous sound or voice. A master of several instruments, Stoltz waves fondly to past icons while planting his feet firmly in 21st century pop.

4:15 to 5:00 p.m. brings Anderson, Indiana's Jon McLaughlin. A classically trained pianist, McLaughlin relishes in the sounds of Billy Joel and Ben Folds, and melds spirited keys with crooner-inspired vocals. The result jumps vigorously between genres like jazz, funk, rock and ragtime.

Chicago's Musical Outfits kick things off Saturday at 11:15 a.m. These four young musicians have created quite a buzz thanks in large part to the group's dynamic live show. Their 2005 debut album, Left Here, garnered spins on popular Chicago radio stations 93.1 WXRT, WLUW and Q101.

12:30 to 1:15 p.m. sees Austin, Texas, band St. James take the stage. The trio's buoyant harmonies are layered copiously over exquisite strings and the occasional piano, creating a moody feast for the ears well-worth revisiting.

New York rapper Lanz takes over at 1:45 p.m. Sixteen-year-old Lanz originally embraced the sounds of Jay Z, Tupac and Nas as an escape from the hardships that greeted her at an early age. Lanz has poured her arduous experiences into her lyrics, resulting in mature reflections in spite of her youth.

From 3:00 to 3:45 p.m., Rhode Island's Elvis Perkins holds down the fort. Dreamy melodies and stories dominate Perkins' music, which draws thoughtfully from folk rock and relies heavily on guitar and occasional fiddle mastery paired with emotive percussion.

At 4:15, Chicago's Kill Hannah wraps up Saturday's day stage. The Atlantic Records recording artists have created a fresh British-inspired rock / electronica hybrid best savored live. BMI proudly offers the opportunity to witness the band Billy Corgan called "the future of Chicago rock."

From 11:15 a.m. to noon Sunday morning, Chicago's Katie Todd Band will pleasantly awaken the crowd. Three albums deep into a promising career, the band is buoyed by Todd's sweet vocals that hint provocatively at the jagged edge buried just beneath the surface.

Chicago's Catfish Haven takes the stage at 12:30 p.m. The band's rustic sound achieves notoriety thanks to soulful lead singer George Hunter's gravelly vocal delivery. Named for the trailer park Hunter called home in his youth, the troupe's authentic grittiness seeps into every corner of their sound.

1:45 p.m. brings Atlanta's Manchester Orchestra to Chicago. The young pop band displays an innate understanding of balancing emotional depths with radio-friendly hooks that often evades artists twice their age. Manchester Orchestra is sauntering down a golden path, prompting Paste Magazine to proclaim, "When experience matriculates into that pre-existing talent, great music will spring from this simply good music."

Birmingham, Alabama's Moses Mayfield hits the stage from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. Epic Recording artists who claim influences ranging from Pearl Jam to Peter Gabriel, Moses Mayfield delivers an insightful rock punch that somehow prompts both introspection and unbridled head-banging.

Chicago's Assassins wrap up BMI's Lollapalooza day stage from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. The group's unique approach to composition and songwriting itself results in experimental layers of electro-rock bearing the distinct thumbprint of each one of the six members.

Canadian Songstress Mandi Perkins to Headline BMI’s July ‘Pick of the Month’

Canadian singer/songwriter Mandi Perkins will be BMI's "Pick of the Month" for July, performing at the Viper Room on Wednesday, July 12. Canada's new rock gem will take the stage at 9 p.m. and tickets will be on sale for $10. The Viper Room is located at 8852 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood.

Perkins is undoubtedly one of the freshest, most prolific songwriters to hit the U.S. from our North American neighbor. Consistently delighting audiences with her enthusiastic performances, her "take no prisoners" attitude, and her contagious melodic rock, Perkins is set for fame. Her sound, a vigorous hybrid of Linkin Park and Sarah McLachlan, is as dynamic as it is emotive.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Perkins began her career at a young age, acting in plays such as Annie and Les Miserables, but her destiny was always in music. As soon as she could, the gregarious artist made a move for California, performing at prominent venues like the Roxy, the Troubadour and the Hard Rock Café, giving birth to the infectious six-track EP, Broken Window (2005).

The self-made artist began spreading her music by word of mouth. Now, thanks to the virtual world of MySpace.com, Perkins has managed to reap an ambitious following, selling over 5,000 copies of her first album before even landing a record deal.

BMI's "Pick of the Month" is a live monthly showcase series focusing on a musically impacting band or artist whose talent is worthy of attention. The series is meant to help expose these artists to the music industry and public through a show held at a quality venue with discounted admission.
